Is he really a baron? I can't find information about his parents.

Not a British baron but part of the extended Rothschild family with a barony that's in use by many members of the family, as is the continental custom. He was Belgian Ambassador to the UK in the 70s.

Thanks Olivier. You'll have gathered non-British titles are not my area of interest or special knowledge!

How does he fit into the Rothschild family tree if he is not descended from one of the 5 brothers who were granted an Austrian barony by Emperor Franz in 1822?

Here is a family, all male to male descendants are able to style the use of the Austrian title, as I have noted on this tree.

Of course, some do not style it.. Though have the right to do so.

An obituary from the Melbourne 'Age' (11 Dec. 1998) gives the following: 'Robert Rothschild married first in 1937 (dissolved 1967), Renee Mattman; they had a daughter. He is survived by his second wife, Mary, whom he married in 1977...

Robert Rothschild was born in Brussels. His father, a businessman of German-Jewish extraction, descended from Moses Rothschild of Frankfurt, whose brother Mayer Amschel, along with his five sons, founded the Rothschild banking dynasty early in the 19th century.' So he wasn't directly of the most notable line of the family, it appears- but then I know nothing of this family in particular and little of foreign matters of this sort in general, so my interpretation may be taken lightly of course.

EDIT: A search string with 'Renee Mattman' provides the 1966 edition of 'Who's Who in Switzerland', giving his parents as Bernard Rothschild and Marianne van Rynveld. This is corroborated by the International Who's Who 1997-8.

Robert Rothschild appears on page 503 of Joseph Valynseele & Henri-Claude Mars, Le Sang des Rothschild, L’Intermédiaire des Chercheurs et Curieux, Paris, 2004, but my copy is in storage and so I cannot give his line.

The full name of his first wife, whom he married 19 May 1937 at Saint-Gilles, Belgium, was Marcelle Renée Mattman. The date given for his second marriage is 24 May 1978.

Surprisingly, nothing is noted about Robert or his father in the Rothschild lineage, unless illegitimate and unrecognised !!!.
