Marvelous news! Have just seen a post on ATR (quoting Daily Telegraph
of April 5, 2007) that the Earl and Countess of Ulster had a boy on
March 12, 2007. The baby, named Xan Richard Anders, will be styled
Baron Culloden.

The Earl is the heir to the Duke of Gloucester.

One less peerage extinction to worry about!

First class news indeed, let us hope that the is the first of many
sons, it would be nice to see one some of the royal dukedoms, become
non royal, in a generation or two.

Will the royal dukedoms become non-royal after the death of the
current holder?

Royal dukedoms:
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh :
Will be succeeded by his son HRH The Prince of Wales, then
(presumably) will be merged with the crown and recreated for HRH The
Earl of Wessex, and then presumably become extinct, the Earl having
only one daughter. Theoretically, the new Dukedom of Edinburgh could
be recreated with remainder to female heirs so that Lady Louise could
succeed as the 2nd (new and non royal) Duchess of Edinburgh
HRH The Duke of Cornwall:
Always reserved for eldest son and heir apparent.
If Prince Charles were to die before HM The Queen would Prince William
automatically become Duke of Cornwall?
I think it is reserved for the eldest son, not a grandson. What
happened when Frederick Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall ( father
of the future King George III) died before his father King George II
in 175?. Not ever going to be non-royal
HRH The Duke of York:
When Prince Andrew dies will become extinct, he has two daughters.
Could be recreated with remainder to female heirs (as the non royal
Dukedom of Fife was in 1900) so that HRH Princess Beatrice of York
could be the 2nd Duchess of York, and her offspring would be the next
non royal Dukes of York. Alternatively could be created for a future
second son of King William V. Prince Harry will probably marry and
need a dukedom before his uncle's death and York becomes available
for him
HRH The Duke of Gloucester:
When the present Duke dies his only son Alexander Earl of Ulster will
become the 3rd (non royal) Duke of Gloucester, and his (currently)
only son Xan will become the 4th Duke. There are no other heirs.
HRH The Duke of Kent:
When the present Duke dies his elder son George Earl of St Andrews
will become the 3rd (non royal) Duke of Kent and his only son Edward
will become the 4th Duke. The other heirs are Lord Nicholas Windsor,
his future sons, HRH Prince Michael of Kent, Lord Frederick Windsor
and his future sons.
So, Edinburgh, Cornwall, York are unlikely to be non-royal any time
soon but Gloucester and Kent will be in the next generation.
What dukedom will Prince Harry be left with?
Clarence- rumours it may go to Prince William if he marries before he
becomes Prince of Wales
Sussex- extinct 1840s
Cambridge- extinct 1850, used as a Marquestate by Queen Mary's brother
and nephew, extinct 1981
Kendal- used by infant sons of James II
Connaught - an Irish title extinct 1943
Strathearn- a Scottish title previously been used in conjunction with
other titles (Queen Victoria's father was Duke of Kent and Strathearn)
Cumberland - suspended due to the duke being on the opposing side in
WW1, current claimant would be Princess Caroline's husband Prince
Ernst August of Hanover
Albany- also suspended for similar reasons, current claimant a member
of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha family

The Daily Telegraph says:-

ULSTER
On Monday 12th March 2007, to Claire (née Booth) and Alexander, a son
Xan Richard Anders Culloden.

Does this perhaps mean Culloden is one of his forenames??

With the demise of the Prince of Wales (Duke of Cornwall) in 1751 the
dukedom returned to the Crown and did not reappear until the birth of
George III's eldest boy a decade later. Smilarly, if the P of W were
to predecease the present Queen then the Dukedom of Cornwall would
lapse.

Kintyre? A Scottish Royal dukedom not used for centuries....

No, I think Culloden is what the kid will use for a surname. Lord
Downpatrick is listed as Edward Downpatrick in facebook while his
sister is Marina Windsor.
