His second wife, Caroline Romaine Combe, is a niece of Romaine Combe
(1916-1951), daughter of Major Boyce Combe, who married Robin, 8th
Marquess of Londonderry (1902-1955).

As far as I am aware, the present baronet is still at the family seat,
Blarney Castle, Co Cork (the old castle, with the eponymous stone, has
been superseded for some time by a 'new' Blarney Castle in the
grounds, designed by Sir Charles Lanyon).

Family Connections
----------------------------

The Combes are certainly a well-connected family.

Two women became Marchionesses - Gladys, Marchioness of Donegal and
Romaine, Marchioness of Londonderry (mother of the present Marquess
and Lady Annabel Goldsmith, and the eldest Jane, Lady Rayne).
[from Theroff] Gladys Jean Combe (1900-1999); m.24 Apr 1943 (div 1968)
Edward Arthur Donald St.George Hamilton Chichester, 6th Marquess of
Donegall (7 Oct 1903-24 May 1975); no issue

Combes also married into the Kilmorey earldom (a Combe was mother of
the 5th Earl), the Conyngham family (daughter of a marquess married a
Combe) etc.

Their descendant was 5th Earl of Kilmorey, father of the present earl
who doesn't use his title.

Major Boyce Combe, of Farnham, Surrey
----------------------------------------------------------
Major Boyce Combe of Farnham, Surrey, apparently the 4th son of

Constance Conyngham, had particularly well-connected children: His

of the 5th Earl of Kilmorey] was also a cousin, as daughter of Blanche

son of Richard Henry Combe, of Pierrepont, Surrey.

2. Romaine Combe (d. 1951), who became Marchioness of Londonderry.

Question:

Why wasn't Combe made a baronet? Or wasn't this the norm at the time?

If I remember correctly, Annabel Goldsmith in her recent memoirs
mentions that her Londonderry grandparents didn't at first approve of
Romaine. They apparently had floated "several infantas" and the like
in front of him, only for him to go for "little Miss Combe from
Farnham" whose father was a brewer.

I don't know anything about the Combes, but even if he was in brewing
I don't see why, as Shinjinee suggests, his family could not have been
elevated to the "beerage" like the Guinnesses for example. The
Guinnesses were very philanthropic, socialites and involved in
politics, however...
