From the Telegraph of 24 Sept 2022: WAUGH James Waugh, died on 12th September 2022 aged 76. Beloved husband, brother, father, stepfather and grandfather. Memorial mass to be arranged.

I take this gentleman to be the son of the novelist (Arthur) Evelyn St John WAUGH 1903-66 sometime head of that gentry family of Piers Court and his 2nd wife (his 1st wife's 1st cousin) Laura Laetitia Gwendolyn Evelyn 1916-73 d of Hon Aubrey Nigel Henry Molyneux HERBERT 1880-1923 (s of 4th Earl of CARNARVON 1831-90 and Elizabeth Catherine HOWARD 1856-1929 (4xgt gd of 22nd Earl of ARUNDEL 1608-52 f of 5th & 6th Dukes of NORFOLK) and Hon Mary Gertrude VESEY 1889-1970 d of 4th Viscount DE VESCI 1844-1903 and Lady Evelyn CHARTERIS 1849-1939 d of 10th Earl of WEMYSS 1818-1914 etc etc. He married __ and had issue __.

I suspect you are right. He was born in June 1946, and the Waughs had a catholic upbringing.
