Alex Cameron KC obituary
Brilliant barrister who represented clients such as Jonathan Aitken and was a role model to his younger brother, David Cameron
…The eldest of four children, Allan Alexander Cameron was born in London in 1963, the son of Ian Cameron, a stockbroker, and his wife Mary Fleur (née Mount), a justice of the peace and daughter of Sir William Mount, 2nd Baronet. A sister, Tania, arrived two years later, followed by David in 1966 and a second sister, Clare, in 1971.
He grew up in Kensington and Chelsea until, when he was six, the family moved to an old rectory near Newbury, Berkshire. At his prep school, Heatherdown, he became friends with Prince Edward and was once invited to stay at Windsor Castle, where they had breakfast on the Queen’s bed. Later educated at Eton like his father and brother, he read law at Bristol University and was called to the Bar from the Inner Temple when he was 23. He also trained as an actor in Paris and for many years appeared regularly on stage at the Edinburgh Festival…
… In 1990 he married Sarah Louise Fearnley-Whittingstall, a lawyer and cousin of the TV chef Hugh. She survives him with their two children, Imogen, who works for a restaurant company, and Angus, a music producer…
… He was also a member of White’s, London’s oldest gentlemen’s club of which his father was once the chairman and where Prince Charles, as he was then, held his stag night before his marriage to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981…
… After the death of their father in 2010, David always referred to Alex as “the head of the family” and spoke of having lived his early life in the shadow of a “brilliant and popular” brother.
“He was three years older, went to the same school, and was a huge success on the sports field and almost always lead actor in the school plays,” he said. “It was great to have that kind of role model, and I was incredibly proud of him. But like many younger brothers you find yourself always a few steps behind.”
Alex Cameron KC was born on August 27, 1963. He died of pancreatic cancer on March 21, 2023, aged 59
