There was the bachelor duke of Devonshire, back in the 1830's but I
don't know if he was gay, in all honesty in the days of yore they
would just have gotten married and did all behind closed doors.

Prince George, Duke of Kent was probably gay as was the 7th Marquess
of Bristol.

The idea that people are either gay or straight is a recent invention.

However, gay kings did tend to give peerages to their boyfriends,
especially Edward II, Richard II, James I, and William III.

Of course, it was a little dangerous to be openly gay when the
sentence for sodomy was death. Mervyn Touchet, 2nd Earl of
Castlehaven, was beheaded in 1631 for sodomy and rape.

If you count Frederick, Prince of Wales as a duke, (he was Duke of
Cornwall and Edinburgh), he apparently had an 'affair' with the 2nd
Lord Hervey, who in turn was said to be the lover of the 1st Earl of
Ilchester. Alexander Pope in his writing variously described Hervey as
'Lord Fanny, Sporus, Adonis and Narcissus....'

`Someone has been watching too much TV! `

Whilst some of the recent tv programmes on members of the royal family
have made assumptions based on very vague evidence such as the one on
the Duke of Clarence not all of them have been wide of the mark.
Certainly diaries from the time raise interesting questions about the
Duke of Kent, not only about his sexuality but also about other
aspects of his personal life such as claims that he was at one time
addicted to coccaine. The only issue I would take with the tv programe
about him is the claim that they were revealing these things for the
first time.

There were no children from that marriage.

What about the "Dancing Marquess" of Anglesey at the turn of the
century, see Christopher Simon Sykes, "Black Sheep of the Family".
Also I recall from Casanova's memoirs and Irish earl, though I don't
know the title.

Some examples:

Edward II's famous boyfriend, Sir Piers de Gavaston, was created Earl
of Cornwall.

Robert de Vere, 9th Earl of Oxford, was beloved by King Richard II,
who gave him Ireland, with the titles Marquess of Dublin and Duke of
Ireland.

James VI of Scotland & I of England had many lovers, including Robert
Carr, created Earl of Somerset, and George Villiers, raised to Duke of
Buckingham.

William III gave English titles to pretty young Dutchmen. Hans Willem
Bentinck was made Earl of Portland, and Arnold Joost van Keppel was
created Earl of Albemarle.

I object to the term lovers in terms of James of I and Robert Carr,
there are has been no seriously conclusive evidence that they ever
consummated anything sexually. See James I by this Contemporaries, by
Robert Ashton.
