Hello Colin, an obituary for Rev. S. G. Ponsonby in 'Report and Transactions of The Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature and Art' gives: 'On his father's side he came of an old Cumberland stock; through his mother he derived from the Hutchinsons of Goldsborough, Yorkshire, the Hepburn-Mitchelsons of the Lothians, and Swinton of that ilk. On the death of his father, Captain Charles Ponsonby, D.A.Q.M.G., Scind Division, at Karachi [n.b. corroborated by BP 2003] in 1858...'

I don't know the derivation of the families you mention apart from an Irish element, and I'm afraid I lack time to really look into this today, but it would certainly be worth doing.

Ah, I find I do have a Bessborough pedigree saved from the Burke's Peerage site amongst my files, which begins with:

Henry Ponsonby was father of Sir John Ponsonby, the first of Bessborough, co. Kilkenny. So there is at least the possibility, not to say likelihood, of some link, I should say.

For the record:

Stewart Gordon Ponsonby's Indian birth record gives mother as 'Caroline'; 1846 marriage record of Charles Ponsonby and Caroline Theophila Hutchinson at Edinburgh. Her father given as Thomas Frederick Major Hutchinson [n.b. the third name appears to be his rank; no other sources indicate him to bear this name, and the Calcutta Magazine and Monthly Register of 1831 gives a 'Hutchinson, Thomas Frederick, Major, 20th Regt. N.I. (Northern India?) Leave for two years to proceed to the Cape of Good Hope, and New South Wales for health'.

S. G. Ponsonby's mother's name corroborated by 'Scottish Episcopal Clergy, 1689-2000' (ed. David Bertie) and Alumni Cantabrigienses. Her name comes up in search results in 'The Ponsonby Family' by Sir John Ponsonby (1929), but I can't view enough of it to add much, which is unfortunate, as based on the snippets visible the book evidently contains comprehensive genealogical tables which would establish Charles Ponsonby in the context of that family. It at least gives his birth year as 1818 and corroborates the 1858 death mentioned above. An 1819 christening of Charles Ponsonby, s. of John Ponsonby and Elizabeth Brown, took place at Crosthwaite, Cumberland. BLG 1858, under 'Browne of Tallantire Hall' (Cumberland) gives a William Browne (1732-1802) [son of William Browne of Woodhall and Orthwaite Hall, Cumberland] who, by his wife (m. 1779) Mary, dau. of Richard Lancaster, Esq., had a second dau., 'Elizabeth, m. to Capt. John Ponsonby, R.N.'; armed with this detail, a search of 'The Ponsonby Family' gives us (clearly in reference to John Ponsonby, as above): 'His name does not appear on the Trafalgar roll, but this may be for the reason that he left the Navy at an early age and settled down on his property in Cumberland. He married a Miss Isabella Browne of Talantire [sic], an old Cumberland family who lived at Orsthwaite [sic] Hall on the Calbeck side of Skiddaw. Miss Browne was probably a lady of considerable wealth.' I note on a second look at the Burke's Bessborough pedigree that a Ponsonby family of Hale, descending from the first marriage of the Sir John Ponsonby, first of Bessborough (see my previous post) [from his second marriage deriving the Bessborough Earls] is treated in BLG 1937; possibly this might further illuminate us but I lack that volume. BFI gives 'Ponsonby of Haile' [sic] in the 1937 volume (so no point digging out my 1952 ed.), and BLGI 1976 (access to my copy of which is also rather difficult at present unfortunately).

Per Geni sources (as always, take with a pinch of salt), Caroline was daughter of Thomas Frederick Hutchinson and Isabella, dau. of Archibald Hepburn Mitchelson of Middleton and his wife Felicite Jean, dau. of Capt. Samuel Swinton, R.N.; the Swinton of that Ilk pedigree I saved from the Burke's site corroborates Isabella's parentage and would clarify the references to these families in Rev. S. G. Ponsonby's obituary I quoted previously. There are other marriages between the Swintons and Mitchelsons of Middleton; also between the Hutchinsons and Mitchelsons (e.g., from The Scots Magazine of 1817: 'At Edinburgh, Captain F. Thomas Hutchinson, of the East India Company's military service in Bengal, to Miss Isabella Mitchelson, third daughter of the late Archibald Hepburn Mitchelson, Esq. of Middleton').

I have not looked at the article on Ponsonby of Hale in the 1937 edition of Burke's Landed Gentry, but I doubt that it would provide the necessary detail on this branch of the family, as the article on the family in the 1898 edition (see http://peerageandgentry.com/cgi-bin/pg.cgi?a=vp&p=blg1898&page=blg189801247) does not. Later editions of Burke's tend to update, but not expand, on articles in earlier editions, so that those family members who are only mentioned as "other issue" continue not to appear.

The genealogical tables in Major General Sir John Ponsonby's work, The Ponsonby Family (1929), do, however, provide the necessary information. Although Sir John says in the Preface to the book that he cannot vouch for the complete accuracy of the tables, he says that he had consulted the College of Heralds, the British Museum, and various books and records. The following genealogy is derived from the tables in Sir John's book, which I have updated and expanded on where possible, although it can certainly be refined further.

He was a grandson of Sir Hector Mackenzie, 4th Bt and 11th Laird of Gairloch; their eldest son, Hector Ian Maxwell Mackenzie (14 VI 1875-27 II 1937), who changed his name to Inglis in 1930, was the father of Sir Maxwell Ian Hector Inglis of Glencourse, 9th Bt (18 X 1903-22 VII 1974), who succeeded to the baronetcy on 10 V 1958.

2g. Sophia Elizabeth Ponsonby (17 VIII 1849-1890) married, 1873, as his first wife, her first cousin, Colonel Justinian Gordon Ponsonby (3 II 1852-13 XII 1929) and had issue (see above).

6f. Georgiana Gilbertha Ponsonby (1825-4 III 1853) married on 9 IX 1846, as his first wife to Rev Brereton Edward Dwarris (22 V 1816-10 V 1901), son of Sir Fortunatus William Lilley Dwarris (1786-1860) and Alicia Brereton.

1e. Margaret Ponsonby (Sir John Ponsonby has her name as Mary, but other sources seem more likely to be correct), married to Major Archibald Gordon of Halleaths, with issue. She was a noted beauty, and caught the eye of Sir Walter Scott. Her marriage to Major Gordon led to the subsequent use of Gordon as a christian name in this branch of the Ponsonby family.
