Quite a moment with Viscount Stansgate returning to the Lords.

His father, Tony Benn, inherited the Viscountcy in 1960 as 2nd Viscount, which disqualified him from the Commons.  He ran to replace himself, won, was disqualified again, and then caused the law to be changed such that he could disclaim his peerage in order to rejoin his Commons, and he generally campaigned to abolish the House of Lords.

On his death in 2014 not only did his son not disclaim the title, but he entered the Lords as an excepted hereditary in 2021. And not only once has he entered the House, but he now twice as he returns to the Lords with a life peerage.

His father must be spinning!

I believe the peers give life peerages are ministers in Lords and so they are given a life peerage as otherwise the work of Lords would have to be halted. If someone knows differently then i am happy to be corrected

Patricia, how could they carry out the House of Lords work anyway since their right to sit has been removed? The only way they could carry out ministerial work is if they were made life peers.

I think an example is David Cameron. He was appointed as foreign secretary on 13 Nov 2023. He was later made a life peer as Baron Cameron of Chipping Norton on 17 Nov 2023 in order to have representation in Parliament, since he had already retired from Parliament long ago as an MP.

Incidentally, is it now permitted to use historic county names for new life peerage territorial designations? I note Sutherland and Merioneth, the latter being neither a preserved county nor principal area of Wales.

Baron Londesborough of Richmond Hill, of Londesborough in the County of Yorkshire.

Of the 26 hereditary peers that were given life peerages in May,  I believe only Viscount Goschen, whose life peerage is Baron Hawkhurst, does not incorporate either their hereditary title or their surname into their new life peerage.

The last four of these 26 peerages have now been gazetted (https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/5158636 and https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/5158394):

THE KING has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 16 June 2026 to confer the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom for life upon the following:
In the forenoon
Jasset David Cody Baron Harlech, by the name, style and title of BARON HARLECH OF GLYN CYWARCH, of Glyn Cywarch in the County of Merioneth.
In the afternoon
Richard John Baron Londesborough, by the name, style and title of BARON LONDESBOROUGH OF RICHMOND HILL, of Londesborough in the County of Yorkshire.

THE KING has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 17 June 2026 to confer the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom for life upon the following:
In the forenoon
Ralph William Robert Thomas Baron Camoys, by the name, style and title of BARON STONOR, of Henley-on-Thames in the County of Oxfordshire.
In the afternoon
Gilbert Timothy George Lariston Earl of Minto, by the name, style and title of BARON MINTO OF BURNCROOKS, of Minto in the County of Roxburghshire.

Note that the House of Lords minute entry recording Lord Minto's oath (https://lordsbusiness.parliament.uk/ItemOfBusiness?itemOfBusinessId=172624&sectionId=40&businessPaperDate=2026-06-17) was not quite right: it had "Baron Minto, of Burncrooks in the County of Roxburghshire" rather than "Baron Minto of Burncrooks, of Minto in the County of Roxburghshire"
