It seems there must be an heir to the Purves [later Home-Purves-Hume-Campbell] Baronetcy. It is listed on an earlier post here at Peerage News among those to which no claim has been proved.

The 1st Baronet had at least three sons. The 8th Baronet, who died 1960, was likely the last issue male of the oldest son. The second son, John, is not known to have had issue. The third son, James, must have issue male living now, however.

There does seem to be some question whether the family Purvis of Darsham was descended from James. In Burke’s Commoners, George Purvis is said to have been “supposed” son of James. The 1871 LG, however, states the relationship as a fact. As of 1871 this George had numerous living male issue, so many that there are likely to be male-line descendants alive today. However, the 1871 LG is the last genealogy I find of them, probably because they sold Darsham in 1885.

Does anyone know whether any claim has been made to the Baronetcy?

Paul,

A late reply!

I have begun to look into this, and some work will be required to work through all possible male-line dynasts of this family. There is good evidence that some family were born, married or died outside the UK, which may make life difficult. From my initial work, I have to say that if there are living dynasts, they may be numbering on one hand, if any.

3.1.1.1.1.1.4.Arthur, of Darsham (25 Apr 1813-    ); m.7 Aug 1847 Mary Jane Clark-Kennedy; Darsham was sold 1885

3.1.1.1.1.1.4.1.Arthur Kennedy (2 Dec 1848-    )

3.1.1.1.1.1.4.2.Charles Kennedy (26 Sep 1849-    )

3.1.1.1.1.1.4.3.Alexander Kennedy (16 Jan 1854-    )

3.1.1.1.1.1.4.4.Frak Kennedy (10 May 1859-    )

3.1.1.1.1.1.4.5.Mary Eleanor

I shall deal with this family first of all as they appear to be the "senior" branch of this line.

Arthur PURVIS, of Darsham died 1 June 1877 - see BLG 1952 (and presumably other editions) under CLARK-KENNEDY of KNOCKGRAY:

Mary Jane, m. Arthur PURVIS, of Darsham Hall, Suffolk, JP (see that family, 1886 Edn), and d. 1892 leaving issue, who, with their mother assumed the additional surname of KENNEDY. He d. 1 June 1877.

Death also confirmed in Probate indices, which find his younger brother Charles Alexander PURVIS living as an executor. Its not clear exactly when the surname of KENNEDY-PURVIS was adopted, but certainly by 1883.

Eldest son Arthur is difficult. From an Ancestry tree (so treat with skepticism, but everything I can check against UK records appears to be correct), he was born in India, and died  26 January 1887 in Switzerland. He married  29 July 1875 Alice Maud SAWYER (1844 Canada - 1924 Winchester, England). They had 4 dau:
Mary Frances Alice K-P (12 June 1876 Canada - 22 Aug 1949 Hove, England), spinster
Gladys Elinor K-P (11 Oct 1877 Bermuda - 27 Aug 1974 Truro, England), spinster
Maud Charlotte K-P (27 March 1879 Cork, Ireland - 5 Dec 1955 Cuckfield, SSX, England), spinster
Evelyn Lily K-P (12 Oct 1880 Guernsey - 1962 Lewes, SSX, England), spinster

Charles Kennedy K-P (Kennedy seems to have remained a middle name as well as a surname) m. 1883 Cecilia Harriet LLOYD (died 1886). He dies 2 June 1916 (see probate - from this it seems he remarried to a "Jane Diana K-P", but I cannot locate the marriage - she died in 1927)
From his 1st m, he had one son:
Admiral Sir Charles Edward K-P GBE KCB (2 May 1884 - 26 May 1946), he m. 1908 (Ethel) May CONQUEST (d 1971); no issue - see Wikipedia.

Alexander Kennedy K-P (died 27 June 1918 Newton Abbot, England). Appears to be a Bachelor, and names three nieces as his executors: Gladys, Maud & Evelyn.

Frank Kennedy K-P (died 27 Mar 1884 Natal) - relying on Ancestry again. Appears to be a Bachelor

Mary Eleanor K-P (17 June 1851 Madras, India - 4 Sept 1909 London) - died a spinster, see Probate index. Relying on Ancestry for birth details.

So no living descendants at all from this family.

More to follow!

3.1.1.1.1.1.5.Frederick (14 Aug 1815-21 Nov 1859); m.23 Sep 1841 Caroline Eliza Purvis (below)

3.1.1.1.1.1.5.1.Frederick Arthur (13 Aug 1844-    )

3.1.1.1.1.1.5.2.George Henry Wheatley (11 Mar 1854-d.an infant)

3.1.1.1.1.1.5.3.Caroline Lauretta Harriet

3.1.1.1.1.1.5.4.Florence Amelia

3.1.1.1.1.1.5.5.Amy

Next branch. Eldest son 3.1.1.1.1.1.5.1 Frederick Arthur appears to be somewhat transitory between different places and was a Solicitor / Barrister-at-Law in various records.

He m. 1881 New Zealand to Elizabeth TRIMBLE, of Belfast, Ireland. With her he had issue (source: 1901 census), at least:

Frederick C(harles) PURVIS, born 1884 New Zealand, m. 1911 New Zealand to Beatrice BOLTON. Died 1945 New Zealand.  [source Ancestry trees, but well sourced]  No issue noted.
Caroline E(lizabeth) A(my) PURVIS, born 1886 New Zealand, died 1967 New Zealand [source Ancestry trees, but well sourced]. No marriage or issue noted.
Mary Catherine Grace PURVIS, born 1888 Brentford, England, died 1970 New Zealand [source Ancestry trees, but well sourced]. No marriage or issue noted.

3.1.1.1.1.1.5.3.Caroline Lauretta Harriet - born 1846 London, England, died 23 March 1896 Eastbourne, England (see probate indices describing her as a Spinster - elder brother served as executor).

3.1.1.1.1.1.5.4.Florence Amelia - born 1851 London, England, died 31 Dec 1929 London, England (probate indices describe her as a spinster)

3.1.1.1.1.1.5.5.Amy Sarah - born 1856 London, England, died 2 June 1924 St Leonards on Sea, England  (probate indices describe her as a spinster)

Ancestry trees give two further siblings in this family, both dying in infancy.
Charles Edward Purvis (1842 - 1847)
Frances Margaret PURVIS (1848 - 1851)

Once again, looks like this family has no living descendants, though somebody with experience of New Zealand records may be able to shed more light on the branch that emigrated there.

3.1.1.1.1.1.6.George John (4 Jul 1816- ) - I am unable to find any account of this person.

3.1.1.1.1.1.7.Charles Alexander (30 Aug 1819- ); m.10 Jun 1851 Jane Lauretta Purivs (below)
Charles died 7 September 1894 (see probate - son & widow as executors). Jane died 20 March 1916 (see probate - son as executor)

3.1.1.1.1.1.7.1.Edward Alexander (1856- ) - a Clergyman. He m. 1913 Madeleine Louise WYATT,  issue 1 son, 1 dau. He died 26 April 1935 [NOT 1936 as in an Ancestry tree].  Madeleine died 21 October 1950 (See probate - executors are son & dau)

3.1.1.1.1.1.7.1.1  Charles John Mulso (1918 - 2007) m. 1944 Janet ROSS, described as a land agent in mother's probate record.  This one is tricky - there are a handful of PURVIS/ROSS marriages around this time, and multiple candidate children. There may be issue, but maybe not.  In the event that he was in legitimate remainder, he appears to be a candidate for 9th Baronet (though issue of his gt-uncle George would be senior to him)

3.1.1.1.1.1.7.1.2 Barbara Mary Mulso (1914 - 27 March 2008). I believe was a Spinster - see probate record.

3.1.1.1.1.1.8.Charlotte Sarah  - I am unable to find any account of this person.

I think it's more accurate to say "no known male issue" - the New Zealand birth registrations are only online for births more than 100 years ago, so conceivably there could be further issue born from 1921 onwards.
