My Lords, I regret to inform the House of the death of the noble Viscount, Lord Slim, on 12 January. On behalf of the House, I extend our sincere condolences to the noble Viscount’s family and friends.
John Douglas SLIM was the eldest son of the Field Marshall William Joseph Slim, 1st Viscount Slim (1891 -1970) and Aileen ROBERTSON (1901-93)
Pet hobby horse: Marshal (one “l” only).
He m. Elizabeth Joan SPINNEY (1934 - 2018) in 1958 and had two sons, the eldest of whom succeeds: Mark William Rawdon SLIM, 3rd Viscount SLIM (born 1960), is not yet on the Peerage Roll, is married with 3 sons, the eldest of whom, Rufus (born 1995), is now heir apparent.
The 2nd Viscount occupied a hereditary seat in the Lords elected by the Crossbenchers and a by-election will need to be organised in due course.

A Service of Thanksgiving for the life and work of Colonel The Viscount Slim OBE will be held at noon on Thursday 16 May 2019 at the Guards Chapel, London SW1.....
The Queen was represented by Lieutenant General Andrew Graham (formerly Colonel, The Royal Regiment of Scotland) at the Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Colonel the Viscount Slim which was held at the Guards Chapel, Wellington Barracks, London SW1, today.
The Duke of Edinburgh was represented by Mr. John Giddings.
The Prince of Wales was represented by Field Marshal Sir John Chapple.
The Duke of York was represented by General the Lord Richards of Herstmonceux.
The Princess Royal was represented by Mr. John Andrews.
Princess Alexandra, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy was represented by Major Charles Macfarlane.
Viscountcy of Slim in the Peerage of the United Kingdom The Lord Chancellor reported that Mark William Rawdon Slim had established his claim to the Viscountcy of Slim in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The Clerk of the Parliaments was accordingly directed to enter Viscount Slim on the register of hereditary peers maintained under Standing Order 9(4)
