Why are the Earls of Effingham not in remainder to the Dukedom of
Norfolk
Answer - the dukedom's remainder follows that specified at the time of
the restoration to the 5th duke in 1660. It names those in the
remainder and specifically doesn't include the Earls of Effingham.
It's not clear why.
Does anyone know why Castle Howard is no longer the seat of the Earls
of Carlisle?
Answer - The 9th Earl of Carlisle's wife was known as a bit of a
radical ('Radical Rosalind') and believed wealth should be evenly
distributed among her family and so left the castle to a younger son
(the ancestor of the Hon Simon Howard).
Bonus info - how many beady eyed peerage watchers have noticed the
2008 Debrett's Peerage now gives the Norfolk creation date as 1514,
with precedence of 1483? It was previously shown as cr 1483.
