The House of Lords website shows that Katherine Grainger joined the Lords - at long last - as Baroness Grainger on 20th April 2026.


It's still a mystery as to why this took so long...

THE KING has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 20 April 2026 to confer the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom for life upon Dame Katherine Jane Grainger, D.B.E., by the name, style and title of BARONESS GRAINGER, of Garelochhead in the County of Dunbartonshire.

I couldn't agree with you more, JL.

Her title, as it turns out, seems simple enough, so why it took so long is anyone's guess.

Perhaps she wanted to incorporate something into her title and that prolonged the entire process. Remember, we now just know her title, it may as well have been something else that she did not get permission to use. Though if we put that to one side, then it is a mystery as to why hers took so long as it did in the first place.

Unless she has said something to the contrary, perhaps she herself may have been in no particular hurry about it, and may have had better things to do, anyway?
