The life peer Lord BEECHAM died on 9 April 2026, aged 81.

He was born Jeremy Hugh BEECHAM on 19 November 1944, son of Laurence BEECHAM 1903-75 (death reg Q4 1975 Newcastle-upon-Tyne) by his m to Florence FISHKIN 1908-86 (death reg Nov 1986 Newcastle-upon-Tyne). He was a solicitor and local politician who served as Leader of Newcastle City Council from 1977-94 (and continuously sat as a councillor from 1967-2022). He was also the first chairman of the Local Government Association from 1997-2010.

He married 1968 (reg Q3 Newcastle upon Tyne) Brenda Elizabeth b 1947 (reg Q2 Newcastle upon Tyne), dau of Dr Sidney WOOLF (possibly 1913-67; birth reg Q2 Newcastle upon Tyne, mother's maiden surname RZESHEWSKI; death reg Q4 1967 Newcastle-upon-Tyne) by his 1938 m (reg Q4 Newcastle-upon-Tyne) to Mildred WIENER 1913-84 (birth reg Q4 1913 Newcastle-upon-Tyne, mother's maiden surname KAUFMAN; death reg December 1984 Newcastle-upon-Tyne). Lord and Lady BEECHAM had one son and one daughter. A statement from the Leader of Newcastle City Council quoted in the article announcing Lord BEECHAM's death (link below) describes Lady BEECHAM as "his late wife Brenda". Does anybody have a date of death for Lady BEECHAM?

He was knighted and appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Tyne and Wear in 1994, and further honoured by being created a Life Peer as Baron Beecham, of Benwell and Newcastle upon Tyne in the County of Tyne and Wear, on 20 July 2010.

Thank you for researching Lady BEECHAM's date of death, Richard and SR Eglesfield. As far as I can see, she was not mentioned as deceased in DPB 2019 (which simply states 'm 1968, Brenda Elizabeth, da of Dr Sidney Woolf, and has issue'). Thank you also to Henry and Sven for their notes about Lord BEECHAM's membership of the House of Lords.

Just one very modest correction to my original post: Lord BEECHAM was the inaugural President of the Local Government Association from 1997-2004 (not 2010 as originally stated above).
