It is looking very like this Dukedom will revert to a marquisate. I wonder if the couple will keep trying like Lord Braybrooke (7 daughters ) and the late 6th Earl of Clanwilliam (6 daughters )?.

Would a ducal grandson here be styled  Earl Gower or Earl of Ellesmere?

In response to Michael's post, previous grandsons have been styled Earl Gower. However that was before the dukedom was inherited by the Earls of Ellesmere. The choice of courtesy title is a matter for the peer concerned.

Lets hope that this does not remain a purely hypothetical question.

If the dukedom reverts to a marquessate, is Earl Granville the next heir male at no 6, or are there living descendants of older brothers of Lord Granville Leveson-Gower, Earl Granville?  (I think Earl Granville is now separated or divorced from his wife nee Anne Topping, and has had a child out of wedlock, but I could be wrong).

Should the dukedom of Sutherland become extinct within the lifetime of the present 6th Earl Granville, the marquessate and lesser honours would pass to 6th Earl Granville (b 1959). The latter's ha is Lord Leveson (b 1999, unm), followed by the earl's brother, Lord Niall James Leveson-Gower (b 1963) and, finally, the latter's son Charlie Leveson-Gower (b 2000). That exhausts all heirs to the marquessate & Granville earldom. The earldom of GOWER would then pass to descendants of the 1st earl Gower's youngest son, currently represented by Mark Broke Leveson-Gower (b 1961, m twice with a son and two daus). There are six other heirs in line to the Gower title after Mark L-G. (All information from the current edition of Debrett's Peerage.)
