I had the pleasure of spending a great deal of time in the late 1980s at the College of Arms with Sir Conrad Swan (then York Herald and Registrar of the College).  He was the most interesting man, friendly, supportive and just one of those people you could listen to for hours and never get bored.  He was so encouraging to me as a young "geek" interested in genealogy and heraldry and meeting him was one of the highlights of my life.  He was never really the same after the tragic and premature death of his wife.  He was a fantastic herald and I was thrilled when he was "promoted" to the role of Garter King of Arms.
