A couple interesting excerpts from Horace Walpole, the first two showing that Richard Ford had to some extent acknowledged Dorothy as his wife, though she apparently never was.

For Dorothy's relationship with Richard Ford, see here, including footnotes:

https://libsvcs-1.its.yale.edu/hwcorrespondence/page.asp?vol=11&seq=426&type=b

[16 September 1791] "... do you know that Mrs Jordan is acknowledged to be Mrs Ford..." though the footnotes show that she never married him.

and

https://libsvcs-1.its.yale.edu/hwcorrespondence/page.asp?vol=11&seq=442&type=b

[16 October 1791] "Mrs Jordan, whom Mr Ford had declared his wife and presented her as such to some ladies at Richmond, has resumed her former name, and is said to be much at a principal villa at Petersham..."

Later, 18 August 1795, HW calls her "Nel of Clarence".

Debrett's Peerage (2003), p 1167 has some of the missing info that is not found anywhere else. I added it to the genealogy as above.

I just noticed the former Oonagh Sarah is styled as Lady in Debrett's though she does not use the style. I was wondering, if an illegitimate child is borne to a peer these days, and is not subsequently "legally adopted", they won't be entitled to the courtesy style as the child of a peer right?

Not legally, perhaps, but I believe that it is now common usage, and even common-sense usage, to accord those styles to adopted children and illegitimate children, especially those who are accepted by the parents and considered as members of the family.

The thing is that adopted children of peers are entitled to bear their appropriate courtesy style (but without any precedence) under the Royal Warrant of 2004 (London Gazette No 57306).

e.g.
If the Earl of XYZ has a son born before his wedlock, named ABC, but is not subsequently adopted, wouldn't he legally just be known as plain Mr ABC, rather than Hon ABC? I don't think he would be entitled to a courtesy style unless he were adopted under the provisions stated above and the example you gave above to children bearing courtesy styles who are "accepted" does not seem right either.

The 2011 Debrett's lists at least two Lascelles sons as "Hon." even though they were born after the marriages of their respective parents.

Legitimated children bear courtesy titles by virtue of the Earl Marshal's Warrant dated 3 June 1970.

Illegitimate children who are neither adopted nor legitimated have not been granted the right to bear courtesy titles

"Illegitimate children who are neither adopted nor legitimated have not been granted the right to bear courtesy titles"

Agreed. Nevertheless it seems that in some cases they are accorded such styles, whether legally or not. And in these modern times it makes sense to me that a sibling who is accepted as a full member of the family can be called by the "Hon." style, especially if his siblings are.

Why should they not be accepted? Please don't live in the past.

"Why should they not be accepted? Please don't live in the past."

It's not clear to what you are responding. I was arguing for the acceptance of such courtesy styles by any such child accepted as a member of the family. I nowhere said that they should not be accepted, though we all know that in and out of the aristocracy, some illegitimate children are accepted and included, and some are not.

I suggest that you call some of your children "Hon." and some not. I'm sure you'll win some great parenting awards.

It is not the same logic at all. In your supposed case one child possesses an actual peerage title, which never confers any style or title automatically on siblings.

In the case I stated, the only question is whether any or all children of a Peer should be accorded Courtesy styles. Sometimes people don't notice that the terms "Courtesy titles" or "Courtesy styles" contain the word "Courtesy". I see no harm in a parent using such a style for all of his children, whether born in wedlock or not, if he uses it for some of them. I'm sure that's what was going through the minds of the Harewoods when they used "Hon." for such children, even if such usage is not authorized by law.

The illegitimate children of the current Duke of Manchester were styled The Hon. in documents issued by a British court regarding their rights to income from the Manchester family trust.   The case accepts that they were born outside of wedlock but for the sake of inheritance (in no way dealing with peerages) they should be regarded as legitimate and not punished.   I seem to remember a point being made that both parties or maybe one party reasonably expected that they were married, not sure of the is a legal point.
