The late Mrs Atkinson's marriage took place on 12 April 1951. Her husband, Maj Denis Cary Atkinson, was born on 19 November 1916, the son of Col Eric Garnett ATKINSON, MVO (9 IV 1887 - 16 IV 1955) and his wife (married II 1916), Olive Marion COLE (c.1887 - 10 IX 1955).
Col Eric Atkinson was the younger son of Brig-Gen Francis Garnett ATKINSON, CB (10 XI 1857 - 25 VII 1941) and his wife (married 10 XII 1883), Eliza Augusta Snow PRESTAGE (13 XI 1864 - 23 II 1941), the eldest daughter of Franklin PRESTAGE (26 II 1830 - 18 XI 1897), an engineer who proposed the construction of the Darjeeling-Himalayan railway, and his wife (married 14 VIII 1860), Eliza Aurelia CARY (29 IX 1838 - 3 V 1908).
Eliza Cary was a daughter of Lt-Col Bernard CARY (8 III 1807 - 14 IX 1880), of that landed gentry family, of Torre Abbey, Torquay, Devon, and his wife, Eliza Agnes DE CASTILLA (1814 - 21 I 1892).
Brig-Gen Francis Atkinson appears to have been the youngest of the ten children of the Rev Thomas ATKINSON (c.1806 - 8 V 1880) and his wife (married 1840), Henrietta Jane WILLES (1819 - 1875), who was herself a daughter of Capt George Wicken WILLES, RN (1785 - 26 X 1846) and his wife (married 8 I 1814), Anne Elizabeth LACON (c.1790/1 - 15 V 1871), second daughter of Sir Edmund LACON, 1st Bt (22 X 1750 - 30 X 1820).
The Rev Thomas Atkinson was himself the son of Thomas ATKINSON and his wife, Rebecca GARNETT, hence the use of Garnett as a christian name by some of her descendants.
