After reading the touching and heartfelt  statement issued by Buckingham Palace, it will be interesting to see if the King attends the funeral, or if perhaps, the Prince of Wales goes in his stead.

Yesterday I watched this video of King Olav's funeral in 1991. I think I saw both Prince Charles and Princess Anne at that funeral.

It seems that the Prince of Wales and the Princess Royal will attend the funeral.

Note: Some fellow members at the Nobiliana Forum recently compiled lists of those present for King Olav's funeral in 1991. The guests then included Lady Alexandra Clare Carnegie and her brother the Earl of Macduff. I don't know whether the Carnegies are still in contact with their cousins in Norway, but if they attend they will likely not be announced in the official British Court sources.

The various royals are not all together, and some searching must be done to find them all. Princess Astrid was there, and members of her family and Princess Ragnhild's. King Harald's first cousin Madeleine Kogevinas is on the list.

Besides the ones you mention, members of the Monégasque, Greek, Bulgarian and Serbian royal families were present.

There is a video on You Tube showing King Haakon receiving these guests at a reception after the funeral.

This will probably be the last funeral were the deceased monarch was so closely related to other monarchs, King Harald was first cousin to two Kings of the Belgians,a Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and a fairly close cousin of the Kings of Denmark, Sweden and England. From now on it will be more and more distant cousins

That's true, by degree of relation at least, but it seems like there's still a conscious effort to maintain close relations among the royal families even though the days of intermarriage are more or less over - Frederik, Haakon and Victoria vacation together with their families, for example, and their kids are probably closer in a real world sense than a lot of the first and second cousin relations were 100 years ago. There was a news item a while back that Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, Princess Amalia of the Netherlands, and Princess Ingrid of Norway have a close friendship and WhatsApp group chat together, as well, and it seems like the Spanish and British royal families are close.

As a side note I think it's interesting how strict so many of the former royal houses are about their marriage rules - maybe it's because they haven't had to adapt to the modern world for survival the way the current ruling houses have, or maybe it's because it's about all they have left that marks them as royal, but either way there have been a number of controversies about approved/acceptable marriages among the Italian/German royals, while I can't really remember the last one from a reigning house.

King Harald and his sisters were forerunners in this trend of marrying commoners.

The Daily Telegraph obituary of Princess Astrid tells us she threatened a hunger strike to be able to marry a divorced commoner. The Bishop of Oslo at the time refused to preside at the ceremony and a retired bishop had to marry them!
