Lady Elizabeth Shakerley, party-planner to royalty and the international jet set – obituary
Elizabeth Anson was the Queen’s cousin, but she had to work for a living and staged parties for Prince William, Mick Jagger and many others
Lady Elizabeth Shakerley, who has died aged 79, was better known as Lady Elizabeth Anson, the founder of Party Planners, a company specialising in organising extravagant bashes for, as she herself put it, “the very rich, the very idle, the very busy and the ones who simply haven’t got a clue what to do”.
…She presided over Prince and Princess Michael of Kent’s wedding reception in Vienna and organised parties at Claridge’s following the weddings of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
In 2000 she staged a huge party for Prince William’s 18th, the Princess Royal’s 50th and Princess Margaret’s 70th birthdays, and a week later helped Princess Michael of Kent throw a joint birthday party for her children, Frederick and Gabriella. In 2006 she organised the Queen’s 80th birthday party at the Ritz and Lady Thatcher’s 80th birthday party at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
…In newspaper articles Lady Elizabeth Anson was always described as “the Queen’s cousin”, which was true – they both had Bowes-Lyon mothers – but the description gave a misleading picture of her life.
..The daughter of Lt-Col Viscount Anson (elder son of the 4th Earl of Lichfield) and Anne Bowes-Lyon, a cousin of the Queen, Lady Elizabeth Georgiana Anson was born in Windsor Castle on June 7 1941. Her godfather was George VI.
She and her brother Patrick (the photographer Patrick Lichfield) had a difficult childhood. Their parents divorced when Elizabeth was seven and their mother subsequently married Prince Georg Valdemar of Denmark, a diplomat, and moved to Paris.
…Patrick inherited the family seat of Shugborough aged 18. Elizabeth was then 16 and was soon pressed into service cooking for house parties, though she had no formal training.
…She was appointed CVO earlier this year.
In 1972 she married Sir Geoffrey Shakerley, 6th Bt, in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey attended by the Queen, the Queen Mother, and the then Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands. Princess Anne was her bridesmaid. The marriage was dissolved in 2009.
Her daughter survives her.

Lady Elizabeth Shakerley obituary
Socialite and cousin of the Queen who ran a thriving party planning business, organising bashes for royalty and rock stars
… That she was born at Windsor Castle and was the Queen’s first cousin once removed did her no harm and whenever Buckingham Palace was throwing a bash, her services were regarded as indispensable. Among the many events she organised for the royal family were a supper party at Claridge’s for the Queen and Prince Philip on the day of the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana; Prince Andrew’s 21st birthday bash at Windsor Castle; a dazzling triple-header to celebrate Prince William’s 18th birthday; the Princess Royal’s 50th and Princess Margaret’s 70th; and the Queen’s 80th birthday party at the Ritz.
… Her own wedding to the baronet and royal photographer Sir Geoffrey Shakerley in Westminster Abbey in 1972 was a suitably august affair, attended by the Queen and the Queen Mother, and Princess Anne was a bridesmaid. She separated from Sir Geoffrey (obituary December 22, 2012) in 1986 and they divorced in 2009. She is survived by their daughter, Fiona, who lives in Suffolk, and by her two stepsons, Nicholas, who succeeded to the baronetcy, and Joth, a photographer. She once remarked on the marriage: “The minute he got his daughter he didn’t want any more, I wanted to have lots and lots.”
She never remarried, living for many years on her own in a 22-room house in Ladbroke Grove…
… Lady Elizabeth Georgiana Anson was born in 1941, the daughter of Viscount Anson, who was the son of the fourth Earl of Lichfield. Her mother, Lady Anne Bowes-Lyon, was the daughter of the Hon John Bowes-Lyon, brother of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. King George Vl was her godfather.
Her parents divorced when she was seven and her mother married Prince George of Denmark, taking the title Princess Anne of Denmark…
… Her father died in 1958, before he could succeed to the earldom. After her grandfather’s death two years later, her brother Patrick became the fifth Earl of Lichfield and she was raised to the rank of an earl’s daughter, even though her father had never held the title.
Lady Elizabeth Shakerley, socialite and party planner, was born on June 7, 1941. She died of emphysema on November 1, 2020, aged 79
