Who among gentry will hand Charles his spurs?

Aristocrats are polishing their family credentials to claim a noble role at the King’s coronation, Valentine Low writes

…who will carry the golden spurs? Will there be falcons? And will the lord great chamberlain be granted his wish to be paid in crimson velvet?

Ever since Richard II was crowned in 1377, the aristocracy has argued its claim to perform services at the coronation. It could be the right to carry the King’s spurs or, least onerous of all, to taste his wine…

The Earl of Derby’s family has had a role at the coronation for centuries. John of Gaunt, the 2nd Earl, carried one of the King’s swords — Curtana, the Sword of Mercy because of its blunt end — at the coronation of the ten-year-old Richard II. At the late Queen’s coronation the 18th earl carried the standards of the quarterings of royal arms…[The 19th Earl] said he had applied. “The family has over the centuries been involved in all sorts of ways,” he said. “But right now none of us have got a clue as to what is going on…I don’t think most of us have got any concept of what the coronation might look like. It’s going to be different.”
Lord Carrington, 74, a banker and crossbench member of the House of Lords, is the lord great chamberlain, a role that rotates between three families — the others are the Cholmondeleys and the Willoughby de Eresbys — with every change of reign. He, too, is in the dark. “You can look up what lord great chamberlains did in the past — dressing and undressing the King and anointing him — but this is going to be different. And no one has been told what their duties are yet.”… The problem is that Queen Elizabeth’s coronation lasted about three hours but this one will be about an hour and a half…Carrington, an hereditary peer, had assumed that his coronation post was a given but he was told to fill in the online form like everyone else…

…Francis Dymoke, 68, is an accountant who farms in Lincolnshire. His ancestors have been the King’s champion since Robert de Marmion, his 34th great-grandfather, was with William the Conqueror in 1066. Since then the role of Dymokes — whose right is attached to the land they have farmed for almost 1,000 years — has been to ride into the banquet at Westminster Hall, throw down a gauntlet and see if the challenge is accepted.
That will not be happening on May 6. One role remains unresolved. The sovereign has been invested with golden spurs at the coronation since the end of the 12th century. The spurs are part of the regalia created for Charles II in 1661 after the previous set was melted down under Oliver Cromwell.
But who will carry them? In 1953 they were carried, one each, by Lord Hastings and Lord Churston, whose family name is Yarde-Buller. They both claimed descent from the John Marshal who performed the role for Richard I in 1189. The Times was unable to contact the present Lord Hastings, a former actor called Delaval Astley who played Cameron Fraser in The Archers.
As for the Churston family, they have stepped back. Then on Thursday [16 Feb 2023] Lord Churston died at home, aged 88. For the first time in nearly 100 years no Yarde- Buller will carry the spurs at the coronation…

The late 5th Baron was a first cousin of Aga Khan IV (b. 1936), as the two shared the same grandfather, John,  the 3rd Baron.

(The 5th Baron's father, Richard (the 4th Baron) was a brother of the Aga Khan's mother, Joan (Taj-ud-dawlah, upon her marriage to Prince Aly Khan).
