In October 2004, Michael wrote that
"Dr Katherine Stafford Heathcote Wyndham, who was b. 21 July, 1947;
died 10 October, 2004, aged 57. She was the younger daughter of George
Colville Wyndham (b. 1916), of Orchard Wyndham, Somerset (head of that
BLG family), by his wife, the former Anne Hodder-Williams.
Her grandfather, John Wyndham, JP, married Maud Colville, of the
Barons Clydesmuir.

The house has apparently remained in the same family since the
extinction of the earls of Egremont, but in the non-titled branch.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchard_Wyndham
From there, I extract

"The estate was originally called "Orchard", possibly a corruption of
the Saxon family name "De Horcherd". In 1448 it then passed into the
hands of the Sydenham family of Coombe Sydenham, and was known as
Orchard Sydenham. Elizabeth Sydenham inherited the house and in 1528
married John Wyndham of Felbrigg Norfolk.[1] The name of the house
changed when Sir William Wyndham, the Member of Parliament for
Somerset 1656-1658 and for Taunton 1660-1679, was made a Baronet in
1661, of Orchard, Somerset. The house has remained in the same family
ever since."

So the estate has passed from 1448 into two families only, one
descended from the other.

The baronetcy created in 1661 became extinct when the 4th and last
earl of Egremont (nephew of the 3rd Earl, father of several
illegitimate children, including the 1st Lord Leconfield who inherited
Petworth, originally a Percy property) died issueless in 1845. I think
his widow, the former Jane Roberts, Countess of Egremont, enjoyed the
property until her death 1875, but am not too sure.

According to stirnet (subscription only) the next branch is the
Wyndham of Felbrigg branch, from where ancestors of Diana, Princess of
Wales originate (but in the female line i.e. originally Lukyn then
Wyndham). This branch died out circa 1810 when the Secretary of War
William Wyndham devised the estate to his sister's son.

Where does the branch inheriting Orchard Wyndham originate? I am not
too clear, becuase there are several possibilities including a John
Heathcote Wyndham.

And a little more here
http://british-miniatures2.blogspot.com/

"It is likely the portrait was a personal possession of the 4th Earl's
widow, perhaps to be carried with when she travelled by coach or rail
between her various homes. For example her home at Orchard Wyndham was
about 40 miles north of Silverton Park. It would have been impractical
to have carried a large oil between her homes."

"The 4th Earl and his Family

To give him his full name, the sitter is George Francis Wyndham, 4th
Earl of Egremont, 7th Baron Cockermouth of Cumberland, and 7th Baronet
of Orchard Wyndham in Somerset (1785–1845)."

"George inherited the title on the death of his uncle, George O'Brien
Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont (18 Dec 1751 - 11 Nov 1837), but he only
inherited the old entailed estates of the family in the west of
England, including the home at Orchard Wyndham showing here."

and on their deaths
"On the death of the 4th Earl on 2 April 1845 at age 59 at Silverton
House, his titles, being the Barony of Cockermouth and Earldom of
Egremont became extinct. His remains were interred in the family vault
at Orchard Wyndham."

"His widow continued to live at Siverton Park and Orchard Wyndham
after his death as the Right Hon. Jane, Countess of Egremont. She died
on 18 Dec 1876 at Orchard Wyndham, her seat near Taunton, when she was
in her 78th year.

The Countess was lady of the manor of Silverton, in the county of
Devon, and patron of six livings. The 1845 will of Lord Egremont,
provided that part of the Silverton and Orchard Wyndham estates be
preserved as "pleasure grounds"."

So the Countess died 18 December 1876

And a lot more on the estate...

"Over 100 years more recently, inhabitants of the Orchard Wyndham home
have included William Wyndham (died 1950), who was involved in
historical research and philanthropy, and his succeeding nephew, who
died young. These deaths were early and unfortunate for the Wyndham
family."

Unfortunately, no details after the death of the Countess in 1876.

The earliest ancestor was JOHN WYNDHAM, of Crownthorpe, and of
Felbrigg, Norfolk, which latter he purchased of the Tstees of Sir John
Felbrigg, KG This John Wyndham, in the 38th HENRY VI, was one of the
knights for Norfolk in the Parliament held at Coventry, wherein the
Earl of Warwick, and other accomplices of the Duke of York, were
attainted of high treason. He married 1440, Marjorie (died 1456),
widow of 8th Lord Hastings and daughter of Sir Robert Clifton, of
Bokenham Castle.

His great grandson was SIR JOHN WYNDHAM (mother was a SCROPE,
grandmother was a HOWARD), Kt (1547) at the coronation of King EDWARD
VI. He married Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of John Sydenham, of
Orchard, Somerset (and thus acquired that estate, which now has the
name of Orchard Wyndham), and died 16 ELIZABETH I.
