Maria Balfour, 31, launched Effortless Eating (
effortless-eating.com)
in 2006. The company provides ready-to-heat food for private dinner
parties, summer picnics, and canapés for drinks parties. Maria lives
in London with her husband Charlie Wigan. She is the daughter of the
Earl and Countess of Balfour.
Effortless Eating is like an invisible chef who creates dinner party
food you’d like to say you’ve made yourself. I use the freshest
seasonal ingredients and devise the menus myself – from minted pea
fritters to chicken with tarragon, and raspberry brownies.
Coming from a privileged background means you have more to prove.
People assume that because your parents are titled you have pots of
cash, which isn’t always the case. That’s why I don’t use my title of
Lady – it can be more of a hindrance than a help. I work from a
professional kitchen unit in Battersea, South London. Being my own
boss
is wonderful, but setting up the business was tough as I had no income
– I had to increase
my mortgage. My aim is to build Effortless Eating into a nationwide
brand, and to have
my own shop.
Top business tip Take advice – I wasn’t good at it at first.
