He was the son of Baron Helmut William Bruno SCHRODER (d 1969) (of the banking family) and Margaret Eleanor Phyllis (d 1994) dau of Major Sir Lionel Edward Hamilton Marmaduke DARELL DSO 6th Baronet of Richmond Hill (GB 1795) and Eleanor Marion EDWARDS-HEATHCOTE.  He m (1) 1969 Patricia Leonie Mary HOLT and had a dau Leonie b 1974 (2) see below

EXTRACTS FROM OBIT:

Bruno Schroder, who has died aged 86, was the billionaire proprietor of the investment bank that bore his family name, but devoted most of his life to the gentle pursuit of other interests, including the welfare of his Hebridean sporting estate.

Schroder was a great-great-grandson of Johann Heinrich Schröder, who arrived in London from his native Hamburg, aged 17, in 1802. The Schröders were a prominent Lutheran merchant family and Johann Heinrich worked as a partner in his elder brother’s trading house before founding, in 1818, J Henry Schröder & Co – which made a name for itself in the Victorian City as a manager of bond issues for international borrowers, notably in Latin America, and branched into investment business in the early 20th century.

The Schröders became Prussian barons but were naturalised as British citizens (and shed their umlaut) during the First World War.

Bruno was the only son of Helmut Schroder (1901-69), an austere figure who led the firm for many years, and steered the acquisition in 1960 of the issuing house of Helbert Wagg to create a more broadly based merchant bank. The tall, softly spoken Bruno became a main board director aged 30 in 1963, after his father had suffered a stroke, but was never best suited to a financial career and within a few years he ceased to have an executive role.

Beyond his dynastic status in the City, Bruno Schroder was perhaps best known as the proprietor of the turreted late-Victorian mansion of Dunlossit, overlooking Port Askaig on the island of Islay. Dunlossit’s wild 18,000-acre domain – chiefly given over to stalking – had been acquired by Bruno’s father from the heirs of the Scottish shipowner Nathaniel Dunlop in 1937. Bruno and his sister Charmaine, together with the children of several of their parents’ friends and a large team of nannies, spend idyllic childhood years there during the early part of the Second World War.

Bruno Lionel Schroder was born in London on January 17 1933; his mother, Margaret, was the daughter of Colonel Sir Lionel Darell, 6th Bt. He was educated at Cothill House prep school and Eton, where he enjoyed rowing, and did National Service as a lieutenant in the Life Guards, serving in Germany before going to University College, Oxford, to read PPE and then to Harvard Business School to take an MBA. He joined the family bank in 1960, working as a junior manager in its banking and corporate finance divisions.

Bruno Schroder married, in 1969, Patricia “Piffa” Holt, whose father was an Irish-born soldier-diplomat. Piffa Schroder took up shooting as a pastime after their marriage and became a celebrity of the long-range rifle-shooting world, competing for Ireland, winning trophies at Bisley and achieving a world record 32 consecutive bullseyes in a match at Cambridge in 1982. She was the author of a number of books on shooting, including Cocks Only, a collection of her columns from the Shooting Gazette.

Bruno and Piffa Schroder had a daughter but separated in the 1980s. Piffa kept her own accommodation at Dunlossit, where she played host to shooting parties when Bruno was elsewhere. They eventually divorced, and he married Baroness Suzanne von Maltzahn, née Mourier, who survives him along with his daughter.

Bruno Schroder, born January 17 1933, died February 20 2019

[EDIT: Added addresses for Michael F. Fane and Jack O. Fane from their probate records.]

Certainly not a source upon which one would particularly wish to rely, but this Daily Mail article- https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-6064589/Bruno-Schroder-85-puts-daughter-charge-420m-despite-claims-unqualified.html - includes: '(Leonie) was seemingly happily married to Eton-educated Nicholas Fane, with whom she had three young children, but she divorced him in 2014; Fane, 57, tragically died shortly afterwards.'

Presumably this is Nicholas Francis Fane, the announcement of whose death in December 2014 appeared in the Telegraph- http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/185155/fane-nicholas-francis (also his funeral, in January 2015- http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/185404/fane-nicholas-francis) The listing of three children (no mention of a [former] wife) is strongly suggestive; usefully, company records show a Nicholas Francis Fane b. 1957, of Hurstbourne Park, Whitchurch, Hants., supported by one for a Leonie Kira Emma Schroder Fane (b. 1974), of that address. At one point she used both names hyphenated: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/L-57193-802

N. F. Fane's parents Mike and Daisy are mentioned in his death notice, as are his brothers Mark, Peter, and Tim. The marriage of a Michael F. Fane and Carole D. S. May took place in 1956 at Kingsclere, Hants. The Who's Who entry for Mark William Fane- http://www.ukwhoswho.com/view/10.1093/ww/9780199540884.001.0001/ww-9780199540884-e-254470/version/1 - mentions his parents as Michael Francis Fane and Carole Daisy May.

Ancestry records show a Michael Francis Fane (1929-1981); U.K. death records corroborate this. His probate record has him of Kingsmoor, Titlarks Hill, Sunningdale, Berks. The 1929 birth of a Michael F. Fane at St George Hanover Square is also recorded, mother's name 'Francis'. In 1925, Jack O. Fane married Evelyn Francis at the same place. Ancestry indicates this to be Jack Onslow Fane; he has appeared in this group- https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/peerage-news/iPyH34oQJ8U/QnyGXARABQAJ - in which discussion it is established that he was born Jack Onslow Traherne (1900-1984), and several aristocratic descents and links are given. The Fane descent is from the 8th Earl of Westmorland.

Royal Ancestry posted in that thread: 'Jack Onslow Fane (25 Aug 1900 - 05 Feb 1984) was, indeed, son of Muriel Ellen Traherne (née Harvey; ≈1880-1938), whose first husband (m. 1896; div. 1902) was Capt. Onslow Powell Traherne (1866-1950). When Jack was born, his father, Cecil William Francis Fane (1856-1914), was married to Lady Augusta Rous (1858-1950). They divorced in 1904. Cecil W. F. Fane and Muriel E. Harvey married on 19 Nov. 1904, 4 years after their son's birth.' This post was followed by Mary-Ann, who contributed:

'Found this bit of information:

SOCIETY DIVORCE ECHO.
RENUNCIATION OF SURNAME.

By the following curious advertisement a society divorce which created considerable interest in England a few years ago is recalled:—

"I, Muriel Ellen Fane, of Beauford Gardens, in the County of London, wife of Cecil Francis William Fane, formerly wife of Onslow Powell Traherne, late of Greenstreet, Park Lane, in the same county, hereby gives public notice as follows:— Whereas I have the custody of Jack Osborne Traherne, who was born on the 25th day of August, 1900, and of Angela Maude Traherne, who was born on the 17th day of October, 1901, and who are issue of the marriage of the said Onslow Powell Traherne and myself. Now I hereby give public notice on behalf of the said issue or children of the said marriage, and of myself, as their guardian, that they, the said children, shall and will renounce, reliquish, and abandon as from the date hereof the said surname of Traherne, and shall and will assume and adopt henceforth tho surname Fane, and shall and will on all occasions whatsoever subscribe the name of Fane instead of tho name of Traherne. — MURIEL ELLEN FANE."

Mr. Cecil Francis William Fane married in 1880 Lady Augusta Rous, eldest daughter of the late Earl of Stradbroke, and sister'of the present peer. That marriage was dissolved in 1904 on the petition of Lady Augusta, who has two sons. Mr. Traherne had also obtained a divorce three years earlier.

New Zealand Herald, Volume XLIX, Issue 15098, 14 September 1912, Supplement'

Despite the mention of the name 'Jack Osborne Traherne', his death record at any rate gives 'Onslow'. The probate record has him of East Oakley House, Oakley, Hants.

Does anyone have a family chart of all those members of the family bearing the 1868 Prussian baronial title?

Interesting, thanks! A long post follows, but not without some value I think.

Bruno Schroder's paternal grandfather was Baron Bruno Schröder (1867-1940), who married Emma Deichmann. The below source indicates his father to be Baron Johann Rudolph Schröder (1821-1887), who married 1849, Clara Louisa Schröder; from the pedigree Mr Said-Vassallo provides, we see that Clara Louisa was fourth daughter of John Henry (Johann Heinrich) Schroder, for whom the barony was created. Who were Baron Johann Rudolph Schröder's parents? We can imagine based on the marriage date and those of her siblings that Clara Louisa was of a not vastly different age from her husband; even if they were first cousins, why would Johann Rudolph be a baron, that being only granted to Clara's father rather than a hypothetical shared grandfather? Was there another completely separate (von) Schroder barony?

From a book called Schroders: Merchants & Bankers by Richard Roberts (thus, one would imagine, being dedicated to the subject, pretty accurate!)- descent from Johann Rudolph (I) to Bruno Lionel Schroder: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=pcS-DAAAQBAJ&pg=PA518&dq=Bruno+Schroder+Emma+dEICHMANN&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjylObXwuPgAhX1URUIHT_QAPIQ6AEIKjAA#v=onepage&q=Bruno%20Schroder%20Emma%20dEICHMANN&f=false

EDIT: Based on figure 5.1 in the source above, Johann Rudolph was the son of Bernard Hinrich II (1778-1824), first cousin of John Henry (Johann Heinrich). J. H. Schroder was son of Christian Matthias I (1742-1821), whose elder brother was Bernard Hinrich I (1728-1811), father, as might be expected, of Bernard Hinrich II. Bernard Hinrich I and Christian Matthias were sons of Anthon Schröder (1697-1784), founder of Anthon Schröder & Co., merchants; he was son of Bernhard (1654-1717), a tobacco manufacturer of Verden.

Presumably another barony was created for the same family that explains Johann Rudolph Schroder being designated as such. Maybe the above will aid someone in coming across further details. Interestingly, in the 'A Note on Names and Terminology' section of the above-mentioned book, it states: 'The family name was Schröder until 1868, when Johann Heinrich Schröder, the founder, was made a baron and he and his descendants became Baron von Schröder. Although the 'von' was used by the family in Germany, they never used it in England or the United States. Helmut Schroder, who was born in England, dropped the umlaut upon his marriage in 1930. Since the death of Baron Bruno Schröder in 1940, all the family have used the spelling Schroder.'

This implies the only barony was granted to Johann Henry, as reflected in Mr Said-Vassallo's Burke's source. Perhaps Johann Rudolph merely used it as a (surely unjustified?) courtesy title to indicate his relationship to these Schroders, as one sees often enough.

As the late Bruno had only one daughter, are there any other living members of the family entitled to the 1868 barony?

Based on the Burke's pedigree, only any male-line descendants of Charles Henry (b. 1826), he having had five sons, two at least 'with issue' (unspecified), so possibly some, and male descendants of the son of the 3rd Baron, William Henry (b. 1867), John Henry William Charles (1900-1977).

Looking into it, J. H. W. C. Schroder seems to have taken the name 'Hopwood' from his mother's side, implying he didn't stand to gain anything by remaining a Schroder, perhaps to inherit Hopwood Hall from his maternal grandfather, Edward Robert Gregge-Hopwood (although sources imply the family left the Hall in 1923, this despite E. R. Gregge-Hopwood apparently living until 1942); why he wouldn't have inherited the barony isn't clear to me. He married, in 1938, Catherine (1906-), dau. of Craufuird George Graham Hutchison, of Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrights., and Marjorie Haigh, dau. of Sir John Wood, 1st Bt. Their daughter, Philippa Margery G. Hopwood (per company records; don't know why it's a different spelling from that of her mother), was born 1943. She married, in 1967, Richard G. G. Haslam, and they have three sons, whose births were registered with the surname 'Haslam-Hopwood'. Given the subsequent marriage in 2000 of a Richard G. G. Haslam-Hopwood, and the death in 2006 of a Richard George G. Haslam-Hopwood b. 1941 (company records indicate the second 'G.' to be 'Grenville'), we can conclude he took his wife's name also, before their divorce (the 2003 Times notice of their son's marriage simply states 'elder son of Mr Richard Haslam-Hopwood and Mrs Philippa Haslam-Hopwood, of Wadebridge, Cornwall'; if they were still married I think it would be worded differently, and there are no other contenders for a 'Richard G. G. Haslam-Hopwood' to have married Margaret T. S. in 2000). A lengthy digression, but I think the above establishes that this branch of the Schroders- that descending from the 3rd Baron- is to all intents and purposes extinct.

Thus the only potential Barons would be amongst the male-line descendants of Charles Henry (b. 1826), as aforementioned.

With regard to Bruno Lionel Schroder's line, I'm still not quite sure how his great-grandfather Johann Rudolf, who married Clara Louisa, dau. of the 1st Baron, was himself a (courtesy) baron; I can't find anything- not least in the dedicated book on the family and their business affairs mentioned above- referring to Johann Rudolf as a baron; that's not definitive, maybe, but it's a strong indication in my book. He's given as 'Baron Johann Rudolf Schroder' rather than 'Johann Rudolf, Baron von Schroder', so it seems rather than holding a title it's a courtesy one; the problem is I can't identify any of his ancestors from whom such a courtesy would derive. Unless somehow he became (unofficially?) entitled to use 'Baron' on his marriage to the daughter of a Baron, which seems somewhat doubtful, at least to me, knowing not much about the Continental stuff.

Sorry for being late, but somehow I had missed this. Below is some genealogy from the German sources. Bruno Lionel von Schröder WAS descended from Heinrich, who was created Freiherr [Baron] in 1868, but only through Heinrich’s daughter Clara. Clara married a distant cousin, Johann Rudolf Schröder, and two of their sons were created Freiherren [Barons] in 1905 and 1904, respectively.
