Melvyn Sorley MacDonnell's paternal grandfather, Hercules Henry Graves MACDONNELL (3 I 1819 - 1900), was the fourth son of the Rev Richard  MACDONNELL, DD (10 VI 1787 - 24 I 1867), Provost of Trinity College, Dublin from 1852 until his death, and his wife (married 26 I 1810), Jane GRAVES (2 I 1793 - 8 I 1882), of that landed gentry family, of Cloghan Castle, King's County.

Mr MacDonnell's wife, née Ethel Gladys JAMESON, was his second cousin. Her father, James Sligo JAMESON (17 VIII 1856 - 17 VIII 1888), of that distilling family, was a famous naturalist and African explorer. Her mother,  née Ethel DURAND (21 V 1864 - 14 X 1933), whose second husband (married 16 VII 1901) was Roberto Henri PES DE VILLAMARINA, Count di Contadone (died 1916), was a step-sister of Col Sir Edward Law DURAND, 1st Bt (5 VI 1846 - 1 VII 1920).
