Burke's Landed Gentry, Principality of Wales and the North West

Edition: 19th Volume III & IV
ISBN: 0-9711966-6-4
No of Pages: 1,009
Year of Publication: 2006

For 200 years Burke’s has been the most prestigious name in heritage
publishing. Our famous Peerage and Landed Gentry titles have long been
the first port of call for those seeking information on British
aristocracy, and now they have been opened up to a whole new
readership. Burke’s continue to deal with people of distinction, but
times have changed and modern Britain is a meritocracy. Movers and
shakers of today owe their positions to a great deal more than
hereditary circumstance, and Burke’s recognise and celebrate this fact
in this new publication.

Volumes III, The Principality of Wales and IV, The North West,
published together in a single clothbound volume, are a celebration of
successful men and women from all walks of life. Detailed listings of
more than 5,000 people are included: prominent public figures,
decision-makers, leading professionals, captains of industry,
academics, celebrities, sports stars and many more. This publication
also retains its historic role as the chronicle of aristocracy, with
genealogies of our noble families going back hundreds of years.

Burke’s Great War Peerage

Noble British and Irish Families on the Eve of the First World War
Edition: 76th (reprint of 1914 Edition with family records on CD-ROM)
ISBN: 978-0-85011-060-9
No of Pages: 939
Year of Publication: 2008

Burke’s Great War Peerage is a reprint of the Seventy Sixth Edition of
Burke’s Peerage and Baronetage that was first published in 1914. This
edition gives fascinating historical insights into the world of noble
British and Irish families on the eve of the Great War. For
genealogists the Great War Peerage is also one of the more important
Burke’s editions when undertaking research into the genealogies of
noble British and Irish families. Along with the latest (107th)
Peerage and the 1939 (97th) Peerage the 76th Edition delivers broad
coverage of all the relevant families. The printed section of Burke’s
Great War Peerage covers Royal Family records, Archbishops and
Bishops, the Knightage, Companionage, Privy Council, Precedence and
Orders of Knighthood. Peerage and Baronetage family records are
supplied in fully searchable electronic form on CD.

The new 2010 collection features the Great War Peerage and Irish
Family Records plus three CD-ROMs that were not included in the 2008
version. The 107th isn't included this time round, although it is on
the CD in full as a PDF.

Newly included content is ...

I'm sorry but I DEFINITELY have everything you list above. Is it that
this 2010 cd contains items previously offered in different
combinations?

The original (2008) Collection included the following three books ...

• Burke's 107th Peerage (2003 / 4,556 pages)
• Burke's Landed Gentry - The Ridings of York (2005 / 958 pages)
• Burke's Landed Gentry - The Principality of Wales and the North
West (2006 / 1,104 pages)

and no CDs.

The new (2010) Collection includes ...

• Burke's Great War Peerage (1914 / 2,978 pages)
• Burke's Landed Gentry - The Ridings of York (2005 / 958 pages)
• Burke's Landed Gentry - The Principality of Wales and the North
West (2006 / 1,104 pages)
• Burke's Irish Family Records (1976 / 1,237 pages)

plus the CDs.

So Great War Peerage and Irish Family Records have been added and
Burke's 107th Peerage isn't part of the new collection. BGWP, BIFR and
the CDs have also been available separately for a while.

Hope this helps.

Yes, thanks that does explain it and confirms that I already have
everything you're offering on this 'new' 2010 cd.

Are there any plans to produce earlier Landed Gentry editions in this
format? Specifically the very useful 1937 and 1952 editions? Not least
because they're so difficult to handle as single volumes. Searchable
versions would be an excellent addition to your offer.

What would make the whole thing more marketable would be a 2010 Burkes
Peerage, but my understanding is that there isn't going to be another
one?

You're right Marquess, we're unlikely to see another paper edition.
The Publisher's preface to the last (107th) edition made that clear:

... neither do we seriously believe that Burke’s Peerage & Baronetage
will continue as a traditional publication in the future. We have no
plans for a 108th Edition per se. This 107th is likely to be the Final
Edition in the form we have known it since it first appeared in 1826.
We believe, and have indeed already demonstrated at www.burkes-peerage.net,
that its future lies in using its digitised data as an online
accessible subscription service. As such, it will be updated on a
regular annual basis rather than, as in the past, with discrete
volumes captured as hard copy print. It is a future where email will
be used increasingly to elicit the necessary contributions from new
entrants and to update what we have already captured.
Since this 21st-century service has already been available on the
internet at $US 25 per day/$US 99 per year for nigh on two years, it
might be wondered why this ‘Final Edition’ is appearing in print at
all. Is it being published to give a flourish to our website services
or to provide readers and collectors with a last chance offer to own a
copy, or both? Well, we do sincerely hope for both of these outcomes,
but they are not our raison d’etre. This 107th Edition is going into
print to put down a very tangible marker on behalf of the families
included at a time when Scottish feudal land tenure is finally being
abolished and nearly all hereditary peers have been made to vacate
their historic seats in the House of Lords at Westminster. ...

But I still maintain old BLGs are a good source of income for the
company!!

What is really needed is a (searchable) compilation of the latest or most
complete accounts of each PB and LG family, regardless of which edition they
originally appeared in. Now that would be a website worth subscribing to!

Agreed. But I fear we're some way off that. The cost in time and money
would be high and maybe there isn't the return there to cover it.

Ancestry have developed an online system for volunteer transcribing and
indexing of scanned images of manuscript content. By getting two people to
transcribe/index each scanned page, and using automated comparisons between
the results, they obtain a high degree of accuracy with low manual
intervention. One feels a similar approach could work in this field.

... we have digitised the 1939 Peerage and the 1914 Peerage which will
be included as part of the Burke's database soon. The Centenary (1937)
and other editions of the Landed Gentry should also be available with
fulltext searching over the next year or so. Burke's Family Index is
also available online.

I knew that Burke's would no longer publish a print edition but I
didn't know that Debrett's would follow suit. Richard, do you know if
that decision is final?

For me, there is something nice about being able to "crack open" a
book and look up what you need rather than just looking at it online.
I know that it is very 20th (or 19th) century of me! (I have bought
editions of Burke's and Debrett's but I'm not sure I would go for
online editions.)

I think one way for Debrett's to continue publishing would be for it
to just include the predecessors and the peer and his immediate family
(i.e., sons, daughters, grandchildren, siblings and aunts and
uncles). If no one in that group is the heir apparent, then there can
be a section including the family of the heir presumptive.

Just a thought...

I haven't said anywhere in this post that Debrett's wouldn't print
another edition. The discussion is this post has been about Burke's
Peerage not printing another, full edition.

Sorry, Richard, I misunderstood.

I guess there is hope for Debrett's after all.

I take it nobody has seen a supplement to the 107th edition? Nor digitised editions of the 1937 or any other recent Landed Gentry?
