A press release from 10 Downing Street, dated today (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/ministerial-appointment-7-june-2022), announces:
"The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Sir Christopher Bellamy QC as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Ministry of Justice.
Her Majesty has also been pleased to signify Her intention of conferring a peerage of the United Kingdom for Life on Sir Christopher."
Presumably he replaces Lord Wolfson of Tredegar, who resigned in April.
Sir Christopher William Bellamy kt was born on 25 April 1946.

Big mistake?  Appointing an experienced barrister, QC and former judge to be a minister within the Ministry of Justice, sounds a great idea.  Cant be many (if at all) with that sort of experience in the Commons!

That's not the point. For a long time we know that there are far too many people in the Lords. Despite that no year goes by without new appointments.

I respectfully but strongly disagree. Now that Lords can retire, there is natural wastage of around 30 a year and the numbers have come down from a peak of around 830 to the current 771.  I support the objective of bringing the numbers down to around the same number of MPs but jot a complete moratorium until that is achieved. The Lords surely needs some fresh blood and if about 10are appointed a year, the objective would be still be achieved, in about 6 years rather than 4.  If we wait 4 years before appointing a single new life peer, the place would assuredly start to look tired.

I dont disagree with the comment about numbers in the House of Lords.... BUT, as you started your comment with "big mistake".... you made it sound like this was a tragedy and that this was some sort of catastrophe!!!!

Lord Bellamy was introduced in the House of Lords this afternoon. Nothing has been gazetted yet but the following details may be found in the terms of the letters patent as read out in the Chamber:
Sir Christopher William Bellamy kt QC created Lord Bellamy, of Waddesdon iin the County of Buckinghamshire, for life, dated 14 June 2022 (today).

Lord Bellamy was appointed to take over as the Ministry of Justice Minister in the Lords after the resignation of Lord Wolfson of Tredegar.  He's not just another Back-Bench Peer, of which I agree there are too many.
