He was the grandson of Aubrey Caulfeild Browne (1860-1953), great-great grandson of the 1st Baron.  The late Rev Aubrey was heir presumptive to Lord Kilmaine, and the next in line to the peerage appears to be his first cousin of the half-blood once removed, Mark Caulfeild Browne, born 1966.

At the age of 87, the Rev Aubrey was among the ten oldest heirs to peerages. Here is a list of other octogenarian heirs to peerages:

1.           Hon. Peter R. Thellusson, born 25 January 1920 (RENDLESHAM)

2.           Hon. Michael B. Hives, born 12 March 1926 (HIVES)

3.           Lt-Cdr. Rupert J.E. Craven, born 22 March 1926 (Earldom of CRAVEN)

4.           Hon. M. James Huggins, born 13 January 1928 (Viscountcy of MALVERN)

5.           Hon. Peter N.T. Eve, OBE, born 2 May 1930 (SILSOE)

6.           Mrs. Christopher H. Fothergill (Linda K.), born 2 May 1930 (BRAYE)

7.           Robert F. Boyle, born 15 August 1930 (Earldom of SHANNON)

8.           Hon. Nigel G. Parker, born 18 November 1931 (Earldom of MORLEY)

9.           Chester D.H. Kearley, born 29 April 1932 (Viscountcy of DEVONPORT)

10.         Michael J. Powys, born 19 January 1934 (LILFORD);

11. Patrick N. Wingfield, born 1934 (Viscountcy of POWERSCOURT); 12. Hon. Michael Spring Rice, born 18 February 1935 (MONTEAGLE OF BRANDON); 13. Hon. Michael H. Richards, born 1 August 1936 (MILVERTON); 14. Hon. James S. Kirkwood (KIRKWOOD), born 19 June 1937; 15. Hon. Peter H. Lewis (MERTHYR), born 1937; 16. Hon. John P. Brooks (CRAWSHAW), born 17 March 1938; 17. Hon. David E.H. Bigham (Viscountcy of MERSEY), born 14 April 1938; 18. Arthur M. Balfour (RIVERDALE), born 24 November 1938.

I'm not completely certain, but two South African subscription websites have a partial death record for him, this often results from a notice published in South Africa's Green Gazette (South Africa's equivalent of the London/Edinburgh/Belfast Gazettes).

A search on the Green Gazette website shows a notice with his name was published 30 September 2016 but this site is also subscription based.

I agree that this is probably good grounds to say that Robert CL Powys has died, but what about his son, Matthew Robert Lilford Powys (b. 1974)? Surely he is the next heir

Thank you for the news of Aubrey C-B's death - deaths of families living abroad are often harder to notice as they tend not to appear in UK newspapers.

Debrett 2015 notes that Matthew died young in 1976.

Thanks Stephen, South African deaths do seem to be particularly difficult to keep track of. The list is also very useful.

Whitaker’s Almanack 2019 lists Robert as the hp to Lord Lilford so maybe he has died over the past 3 or 4 months

Here's hoping the  present Lord Kilmaine , at only 35, will have a son and put the question of succession to rest.

Are all of these heirs older than the current peers?

According to Ancestry death indices, Peter Robert Thellusson died January 2007 (with a listed DoB 25/01/1920, so definitely him).

In answer to BX, all of the heirs are older than the current peers, and in some cases like Malvern and Craven they are the only heirs.
