From the Telegraph and Times of 3 May 2019: EYSTON John Joseph (Jack) died peacefully on 23rd April 2019, aged 84. Survived by his wife, Lady Anne, their children, Edward, Katharine and Mary and seven grandchildren. A strictly private immediate family funeral and burial will be on 8th May. A Requiem Service will be held at 11am on Friday 31st May 2019 at The Oratory School Chapel, Woodcote, Reading. All welcome.

He was s of Capt Thomas More EYSTON (1902-40), scion of the gentry family of that name of East Hendred and of the PETRE barons, NORFOLK and LENNOX dukes, TICHBORNE Bts etc etc, and Lady Agnes Marjorie Alice Mary SAVILE (1907-87) d of 6th Earl of MEXBOROUGH (1868-1945) by his w a scion of the BRABOURNE barons. He m 1968 Lady Anne Priscilla MAITLAND (b 1940, raised to the rank 1953) d of Lt Viscount Maitland (1915-ka1943) s of the 15th Earl of LAUDERDALE (1891-1953)) and Helena Ruth (1912-99, d of Col Sir Herbert Charles PERROTT 6th Bt (1849-1922) and Ethel Lucy HARE (1876-1939), scion of the DYSART earls, SOMERSET dukes, etc etc), and had a son and two daus.

Charles Kingsley-Evans tells me that Jack Eyston "was the eldest male in line among the descendants of St Thomas More". Thanks for that little nugget!

nice. What does that mean, though? Was he a direct male-line descendant? Or just the oldest male descendant?  I am unfamiliar with the terminology "eldest male in line".
