I'm unclear what grand connections - if any - this gentleman had but
the obit mentions his connection with Henry Bannerman of Manchester,
founder of the eponymous clothing firm, whose descendant married a
Campbell Bt and was the mother of the Prime Minister Sir Henry
Campbell-Bannerman, the latter assuming his mother's name and her
brother's arms at some point.

The hyphenated surname arose because in his will Henry Bannerman made
it a condition of his nephew's inheriting his property (Hunton Court)
that he adopted too the name of Bannerman. Sir Henry was the son of
Sir James Campbell Kt.

Thanks for the correction. I meant to type Kt & put Bt instead! I
gather the PM didn't like the double barrel surname and only took it
to satisfy the conditions of his uncle's will. He much preferred being
referred to simply as 'CB'

I know that Sir Henry had a heart condition and refused a seat in
the upper chamber, pity he did not take a peerage, would it it now
have been extant if he did?

In a word, no. Not if it was with the usual remainder to legitimate
male heirs of the body. But he has a gt gs who is an earl. His
marriage produced an only child:
Louisa (d 1873) who married presumably a cousin, James Alexander
Bannerman (d 1906) of Manchester and they had an only son:
James Campbell Bannerman, of Hunton Court, Maidstone (1857-?) married
1883, Frances Louisa (d 1938) dau of Henry Joy, of Bacte, Woodtown, Co
Dublin, and they had an only daughter:
Joan (18-- to19--) who married 1916 Capt Geoffrey Charles Devas MC (LG
family DEVAS of Hunton Court) son of HORACE GEORGE DEVAS, of
Hartfield, Hayes (which he sold 1919), and Ightham Warren, Kent and
Edith Caroline dau of Lt-Col Hon Henry Walter Campbell (E Cawdor
colls) and had issue (a son and a dau):
1 Capt Michael Campbell Devas MC b 1924 m 1 1952 (divorce 1967)
Patience Merryday dau of late Sir Albert Gerald Stern, KBE, CMG, of
Barham Court, Maidstone (LG family) and had issue (a son and a dau):
i James Campbell DEVAS b 1955
i Annabel DEVAS b 1954
Capt Devas m 2 1967, Gillian Barbara (formerly wife of Charles Arthur
Smith-Bingham (LG family)) and daughter of late Col H M P Hewett, of
The Court House, Chipping Warden, nr Banbury

1 Rachel Anne married 1946 the 10th Earl De La Warr, son of the 9th
Earl & 1st wife Diana (a dau of the Leigh of Thorpe Satchville Hall LG
family) and has issue, two sons (1 - the present 11th Earl who has two
sons, an heir (Lord Buckhurst) and a spare) and 2 - Hon Tom Sackville
(who is married with 2 adopted children) and one daughter (Lady
Arabella Sackville (resumed maiden name) who is the former wife of
Count Giovanni Emo Capodilista Maldura, of Palazzo Grazioli, Rome (of
the Earl of Newburgh's family) no issue)
