The appointment of Boris Johnson as PM today led me to ask the question of how many PMs have been related (in a traceable way) to the King/Queen that appointed them? The current PM and the Queen are both descended from George II and David Cameron and the Queen are both descended from George III but their must be others...any thoughts? The number may be limited given that the title / office of PM as we understand it today originated as a result of the Hanoverian succession and that dynasty was not one which customary married with the peerage (unlike the House of Windsor).

The Queen is great great great granddaughter of the third Duke of Portland the Prime Minister with the longest gap between his two terms in office 1783 and 1807-1809.The third Duke of Grafton was a great grandson of Charles 11 and Prime Minister 1766-1767. This does not exactly answer the question but is still worth noting

My research shows Tony Blair's ancestry goes back to James V of Scotland.

Edward J. Davies published an article showing the descent of Tony Blair from James V in the Fall 2008 issue (vol. 22 no. 2) of "The Genealogist" [TG]).

My question was primarily directed at which monarchs have appointed traceable relatives to the post of prime minister. But nevertheless thank you all for your responses.

On the more general theme William and Harry are also related to Lord John Russell and Winston Churchill through their common descend from the first Duke of Marlborough. This means  William as a future sovereign is related to at least nine Prime Ministers Grafton,Devonshire,Portland,Grey,Russell,Churchill,Blair,Cameron and Johnson

Never mind. Elizabeth II has been on the throne a long time--longer than I've been alive--but she was not Queen when Rosebery was P.M., more than a century ago.
