His grandfather was the poet and writer Walter DE LA MARE OM CH (1873–
1956). He was married first to Erica Pennell in 1956; she died as he
approached retirement. There were two sons and a daughter from the
marriage. Subsequently he was married to Caroline Middleton, who
survives him.
His dau, Sarah Carolyn, is the 2nd wife of Alexander James MACLEAN (b
1949) hp to the Maclean of Dunconnel Btcy (cr UK 1957) and scion of
the Lords LOVAT. Mrs Maclean is mother of Alexander's two sons (next
in line to the title after their father): Alexander Fitzroy Nicolas b
1996 and John Allan Rupert b 2000.
