...the Duke, Edward Fitzalan-Howard, 65, got married Chelsea Old Town Hall, in the King’s Road, on Thursday evening, to Francesca Herbert, 59.

As the leading lay Catholic in the country, the duke knows that in the eyes of God he is still married to his first wife.

While I respect and accept your point, it could also be said that His Grace knows that in the eyes of the law he is married to his second wife

The laws of God are eternal and immutable those of man are not; simply because the latter will not be around forever to hold them to account.

We do not want religious fanatic behaviour here.

marquess, It is impertinent to outright make religious proclamations upon every notable social issue that occurs in this group. This group is here to inform and to explain, not to shun and admonish. We cannot judge nor can we pass judgement on the behaviours or choices of others.

The personal lives of individuals are to be discussed in a scholarly and respectful manner, not flagrantly whipped up with religious fervour.

As a Catholic you can't be married twice, unless your wife is dead or you have an annulment,  the Duke of Norfolk is the leading Catholic in the country. Simply pointing this out seems to have annoyed so many. This seems to be the way of the world these days, when facts are pointed out that people don't like. This is not a matter of my opinion or an admonishment on my part but one of the doctrine itself which it condems all Catholics who break it.

I am afraid, Marquis is right from the Roman Catholic point of view. But saying that, it was an essence as much some time ago but not so much today. The Duke married second time not in a church which is still legal in the UK. Though the prehistoric Roman Catholic church has continued to fail in many ways than one in updating their church into the 21st century. So opinions on all fronts are meaningless at best...

If the Duke were to convince his first wife to take the veil and enter a convent, he would then be free to marry again. That was what Peter the Great of Russia did. Henry VIII tried to convince Catherine of Aragon to do the same, but she was unwilling.

I’m pretty certain that the Duke’s quasi role as leading Catholic is something exactly zero UK Catholics care about.
