… Felicia Nicolette Coates was born in Worcester in 1941 to a German mother, Elizabetta Carlotta Horsmeier, known as Lotchen. As a teenager, Lotchen had fled Berlin. She had been preparing to dance before Hitler at the opening ceremony of the 1936 Berlin Olympics before being withdrawn at a late stage when the authorities found out she was Jewish.

She arrived in Britain as a refugee and settled in Worcester, where she trained as a nurse and became pregnant with Nicky. She later married an RAF sergeant and had three more children. Nicky attended Worcester Girls’ Grammar School and studied art history at the Courtauld Institute in London. She lectured at the Camberwell School of Art and at St Martin’s School of Art before becoming the second wife of the printing tycoon and Labour party donor Robert Gavron, later Lord Gavron of Highgate, in 1967.

Gavron had recently been widowed and Nicky adopted his two young sons before having two daughters. They divorced in 1987. She is survived by the daughters, Jessica, a lawyer, and Sarah, a film director…
