OBITUARY

Sir Samuel Whitbread obituary

Scion of the brewing family and countryman who saw himself as a farmer first and chairman of Whitbread second

… Whitbread was a farmer first and a brewer second; he joined the board of the eponymous family brewing company under pressure. His father, Simon, had been on the board as a non-executive but avoided succeeding his brother as chairman. The family stayed on the sidelines until Sam was encouraged to reclaim the chairmanship in 1984…

… Samuel Charles Whitbread was born in London in 1937, the only son of Helen (née Hepburn-Stuart-Forbes-Trefusis) and Simon Whitbread. Sam said of his father: “Ours was a distant relationship. I cannot say that I knew him well.”…

… [He] married Jane Hayter, whose father was a leading Hereford cattle breeder. When Sam knuckled down to running the brewery, Jane ran an adoption agency, started a vineyard on the estate and managed a herd of British White cattle. They had three sons and a daughter. Charles runs the family estate, William has been a wine merchant and ostrich farmer, and Henry and Victoria live privately…

Sir Samuel Whitbread KVCO, businessman and farmer, was born on February 22, 1937. He died on January 17, 2023, aged 85
