A curious peerage this one, goes through the female line with a an
unusual patent, though I don't think any female has succeed to it
yet.

Why is Francis Melfort William Fitzherbert, here the 9th Baron
referred to as the 15th Baron elsewhere?

If I recall correctly there was an attainder on the peerage at one
point, thus some people that the succession still continues despite
the attainder and some that it does not, hence the discrepancy in
numbering. See Lovat and Perth for further examples off the top of my
Peerage head.

Indeed - if I recall correctly the 17th century 5th Baron was forced
to surrender the Barony due to poverty, in exchange for some cash.
Some authorities deem to surrender to have been illegal.

The title reverted to a collateral branch - if this restarted the
numbering the current Baron is the 9th. If the break is ignored, he is
the 15th.

I have just looked at Wikipedia, and this seems to be the case, if
Wikipedia is correct!
