He was son of David Pattee KIRBY (d 1953) and (m 1924) Eileen Frances Mariette (1900-1992) dau of Arthur Hill Nunn BRUCE (1854-1918), scion of the Bruce-Clifton (orig Bruce) Baronets (1804) being descended from the 3rd son of the 1st Baronet, and (m 1900) Rose STEEN (d 1947). Bruce Kirby, who has died aged 92, was a Canadian boat designer whose single-person racing dinghy, the Laser, became one of the most successful sailboats in the world.
Bruce Robert William Kirby was born in Ottawa on February 2 1929 and began his career as a reporter in Montreal before becoming editor of One-Design & Offshore Yachtsman and later Yacht Racing.
In 2017, he was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada.
He is survived by his wife Margo.
