The title was also called Saint John of Torphichen, so effectively created 24 jan 1563 by a regnant to himself and his heirs and assignees of the lands (territorial) baronies, estates and offices previously attaching of the office of Prior of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem in Scotland, he having held that post from 1546, just as Scotland was being transferred by the reformation, of which he was a supporter. Note the Priors of the Knights of St John had previously been entitled to a seat in parliament among both the prelates and the Baronies of Torphichen, the greater Barons.
