Simon Robert CROOKENDEN, KC (born 27 IX 1946) is the son of Maj Spencer CROOKENDEN, CBE, MC (17 IV 1919 - 5 XII 2006) and his first wife (married 1945, as her second husband), Jean Phyllis DEWING (17 X 1918 - 29 XII 1957), who was herself the posthumous younger daughter of Lt-Col Robert Edward DEWING, DSO (4 VIII 1888 - 4 IV 1918) and his wife (married c.1913), Ruby Edith BOULDERSON (c.1887 - 21 IV 1919).

Lt-Col Robert Dewing was the eldest son of the Rev Richard Standly DEWING (5 XI 1854 - 24 VI 1931) and his wife (married 1887), Dorothea Susanna PETTIWARD (30 XII 1857 - 21 II 1902), the second daughter of Maj Robert John PETTIWARD, né BUSSELL (c.1819 - 3  II 1908) and his wife (married 25 I 1855), Lady Frances Ann Catherine NELSON (26 III 1826 - 14 IV 1877), the eldest daughter of the 2nd Earl Nelson.

Maj Robert Pettiward and his wife, Lady Frances Nelson, were second cousins. She was a granddaughter maternally of John Maurice EYRE (1753 - 1815), whose brother, the Rev Henry EYRE (1754 - 1798) was married secondly, on 15 November 1786, to Frances PETTIWARD (died 1827), daughter of the Rev Roger PETTIWARD (1712 - 1780), by whom he was the father of an elder (and only surviving) daughter, Frances EYRE (c.25 IX 1788 - 1868), who married Robert BUSSELL, by whom she was the mother of Robert John BUSSELL, who assumed the surname and arms of PETTIWARD by Royal Licence on 22 January 1856. Per Burke's Family Index, the Eyre family, formerly of Brickworth and Landford, and the Pettiward family, formerly of Finborough Hall, both last appeared in Burke's Landed Gentry in the 1937 edition.

Maj Spencer Crookenden, sometime chairman of K Shoes Ltd, was the youngest brother of Lt-Gen Sir Napier CROOKENDEN (31 VIII 1915 - 31 X 2002), who was the husband (married 3 VIII 1948) of the Hon Patricia Nassau KINDERSLEY (5 VIII 1922 - 4 VI 2010), elder daughter of the 2nd Baron Kindersley.
