Rear-Admiral Tim Bevan, who has died aged 88, was the charismatic captain of Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, from 1982 to 1984
Timothy Michael Bevan was born in London on April 7 1931. He attended Sandroyd prep school from where, inspired by reading Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons, he wanted to join the Navy. However, failing the naval eyesight test, he was sent to Eton.
From his father, an ex-soldier, he inherited a gregarious nature and immense humour. From his uncle, Colonel Johnny Bevan CB MC, with whom he was very close, and who had been called in by Churchill to run deception operations in the Second World War, he inherited an interest in military history, as well as a dancing faun statuette that had adorned Johnny’s office in the Cabinet War Rooms.
His last uniformed appointment, as a rear-admiral, was from 1984 to 1986 as Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Intelligence), and he was made CB before retiring from the Navy in 1987.
In 1970 Bevan married Sarah Knight, who was famed for her social ease with everyone, from royalty to junior members of the crews of Bevan’s ships, for filling the family home with animals to keep her company during Bevan’s absences, and for her love of ponies, riding and carriage driving, which eventually rubbed off on her husband.
She died in 2016 and Tim Bevan is survived by their three sons, who are all inveterate travellers.
