I'm curious re the family connection twixt the great & gifted Linley
family, of Bath, to Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, and
Viscount Linley, of Nymans. When Tony was awarded his peerages, in
1961, it was reported in the Press that his choice of subsidiary title
of Viscount Linley was to complement his famous ancestors of that
name.
But where is the connection? Thomas Linley (senior) the composer
(January 17, 1733–November 19, 1795), married one Mary Johnson, and
they had issue:-
12 children, 7 of whom went on to musical or theatrical careers:
Elizabeth Ann Linley (1754 - 1792), his eldest daughter, wife of
Richard Brinsley Sheridan (October 30, 1751 – July 7, 1816) the great
playwright. They had a son, Tom (1775-1817). By his second wife,
Esther Ogle, the playwright had a 2nd son Charles Brinsley Sheridan (d
1843). Sheridan's granddaughters (daughters of Tom by Caroline
Henrietta Callander. They wed in 1805) were (i) Helen who m. the 4th
Baron Dufferin & Claneboye (from whom descends the exinct Marquesses
of Dufferin & Ava)(ii) Caroline Norton (1808-77), the society beauty,
feminist, author, &c (see Grantley B), who m (1) the Hon George Norton
(1800-75), a brother of the 3rd Baron Grantley, and (2) Sir W.
Stirling-Maxwell, Bt.Caroline's grandson succeeded as 4th Baron
Grantley.
(iii) Georgiana Sheridan (d 1884), who became Duchess of Somerset,
wife of the 12th Duke .

Thomas Linley the younger (1756-1778), his eldest son, a noted
violinist was the eldest son, and was a remarkable singer, violinist
and composer in his own right. He became known as "the English
Mozart". He met Mozart and was a friend. Did he die unm. and
childless? Aged 22 in a boating accident at Grimsthorpe Castle in
Lincolnshire, seat of the Earls (dukes?) of Ancaster, and is buried at
Edenham Parish Church

sang in his father's concerts, 1774-5, and played the oboe. In 1778 he
became a midshipman on HMS Thunderer, aboard which he contracted the
fever from which he died. Unm.

He graduated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1789, becoming a
minor canon of Norwich Cathedral the following year and Junior Fellow
and Organist at Dulwich College from 1816. He was noted for his
eccentricity and strong language.

Reference is made to 5 other children of Thomas Linley and his wife
(nee Johnson), but no names, descendants given.
I have the Messel pedigree (Snowdon's mother's family). Snowdon's
mother, Anne Messel, a great beauty, b 8 Feb 1902; d 3 July 1992, at
Nymans, Sussex. (Times 11 July, 1992) She m. 1stly, 22 July, 1925 (div
1934), Ronald Owen Lloyd Armstrong-Jones (he d. 27 Jan 1966)
having had issue:-
(i) Susan Armstong-Jones, b 1927, m 20 May 1950, the 6th Viscount de
Vesci, and has issue
(ii) Antony Armstrong-Jones, b 7 Mar 1930, created Earl of Snowdon and
Viscount Linley, of Nymans, 6 Oct 1961. Married (1) 6 May 1960 (div
1978), HRH The Princess Margaret Rose (b 21 Aug 1930; d 9 Feb 2002),
&c.
The former Anne Messel married 2ndly, 19 Sept, 1935, the 6th Earl of
Rosse (b 28 Sept 1906; d 1 July, 1979) (see Daily Telegraph 3 July
1979), and had further issue:-
(iii) The 7th Earl of Rosse, b 21 Oct 1936
(iv) The Hon Martin Parsons, b 23 Dec 1938.
Anne Messel was the daughter of Lt-Col Leonard Charles Rudolph Messel,
OBE, TD, of Nymans, Staplefield, Sussex (see BLG), by his wife (they
wed at Kensington in 1898) the former Maud Frances Sambourne
(1875-1960), dau of Edward Linley Sambourne (b Clerkenwell, Middx, 4
January, 1844– d Kensington, 3 August 1910) the cartoonist for Punch,
who married at Thanet, Kent (Oct-Dec 1874) Mary Anne Herapath.
Edward Linley Sambourne was the son of Edward Sambourne, by his wife
Frances Linley.
I have located the death at Brentford, Middx (Oct-Dec 1892) of one
Frances Sambourne, born at Norton, Derbyshire, circa 1812. The IGI
has the birth of a Frances Linley, at Norton, Derbys, 1 Dec 1811,
daughhter of Peter Linley, by his wife the former Sarah Bingham. Peter
& Sarah married at Norton, 8 Dec 1803 (IGI).
Is this Frances Sambourne the widow of Edward Linley Sambourne?
The current head of the Messel family (Linley) Thomas Messell, son of
late Colonel Linley Messel, married Penelope J Barratt, at the Guards'
Chapel Wellington Barracks, London, 7 Oct 1981 (Times 21 Oct 1981)
daughter of the late Timothy Barratt and Mrs Barratt, of Millom,
Cumbria.
They have issue, at least one son, Harold Linley M Messel, born at
Hammersmith in July 1986. And so the Linley association with the
family lives on.
