I see Lady Anne Cavendish-Bentinck died on 21 December, aged 92. She
was the last surviving daughter of the 7th duke of Portland and was
unmarried.

Telegraph obit
Lady Anne Cavendish-Bentinck, who died on December 21 aged 92, was one
of the richest landowners in Britain.
Had she been a boy, she would have succeeded her father as 8th Duke of
Portland. He had no male heirs, which meant that the dukedom passed to
a distant relative and eventually died out. But owing to a legal
arrangement by her grandfather, the 6th Duke, Lady Anne inherited the
family fortune, estimated at more than £150 million.... contintued at

I had often wondered if one of the four ancestral seats would have
been left to the current earl of Portland? Though my understanding
from an earlier thread on this site, was that a relative was an
Italian Prince and was in control of the estates? Now if these were
the 1890's then we would have seen an hereditary peerage conferred
just like the case of the Earls of Ancaster.

I believe the grandfather the 6th Duke (half-brother of Lady Ottoline
Morrell) himself inherited thanks to a re-entail by the bachelor 5th
Duke I believe; otherwise all the family property would have gone to
his heirs of line, the Lords Howard de Walden. Instead, the grandchild
of the 6th Duke and child of the 7th Duke benefitted. Did the last
Dukes of Portland inherit nothing?

Have you seen this error?
"Her grandfather, the 6th Duke, a younger half-brother of the Countess
of Strathmore (mother of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother), had not
been in direct line for the dukedom."

This from the Telegraph! The 6th Duke was a first cousin, son of the
Countess's father's younger brother!

According to the obit, Lady Anne Cavendish-Bentinck (1916-2008) wished
to marry the 11th Duke of Leeds (1901-1963) who was later thrice
married with one daughter Lady Camilla Dempster (2nd wife of the late
gossip columnist).

Why did the family refuse to let them marry? Was he already married
(1933) to his first wife whom he divorced sp in 1948?

The last duke got nothing as far as I am aware though I did see him
interviewed about the secret service or something about 25 years ago
and he seemed in very plush surroundings. It would be a travesty if
some of the property did not go to the current earl of Portland or one
of his sons. Women are always ruining peerage as well as saving at the
same time!

TRIBUTES are being paid to Lady Anne Bentinck of the Welbeck Estate
who died on 29th December aged 92.
Lady Anne, who was ranked 511th on the Times Rich List in 2008, was
the eldest daughter of the seventh Duke of Portland.

As a debutante, she was front-page news when she was told to accept
the hand in marriage of the nobleman destined to be prince regent of
Belgium.
But wilful Lady Anne Cavendish-Bentinck refused him - declining to get
out of bed when the luckless suitor arrived at her stately home.
She later set her sights on the handsome Duke of Leeds, but her family
refused her permission to wed and she defiantly vowed never to marry
anyone else. Extraordinarily, she kept her promise for the rest of her
life.
Equially unusually, the death of Lady Anne at the age of 92 has so far
gone publicly unrecorded by her closest relatives - no death notices,
no obituaries.

Sounds like all the property has gone to the Niece and her husband,
nothing for the earl of Portland.

"She never married and is survived by her beloved younger sister Lady
Margaret's son William Parente, his wife Alison and their children
Joseph and Daisy."

Even more interesting, since her younger sister's son William Parente
stands to inherit everything presumably. A quarrel perhaps with his
maternal aunt....
