Obit in the Times of 15 Dec 2022:
General Lord Ramsbotham obituary
Adjutant-general of the army known as ‘the Ram’ who later became an uncompromising and outspoken chief inspector of prisons
...David John Ramsbotham was one of three sons and two daughters of the Right Reverend John Ramsbotham, a much-loved bishop of Wakefield in the Tractarian tradition. After Haileybury and Imperial Service College, he undertook National Service in the Royal Artillery before he, like his father, went up to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He returned to a regular commission with the Rifle Brigade (later incorporated into the Royal Green Jackets) and a four-year secondment to the King’s African Rifles in Kenya...
After leaving the army, in addition to his work as Inspector of Prisons, he became chairman of the Hillingdon Hospital Trust. He was made an honorary Doctor of Civil Law by seven universities, and ennobled in 2005 as Baron Ramsbotham of Kensington, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
In 1958 he married Caroline Dickinson, daughter of Robert Joicey Dickinson, and his wife the former Alice Barnett, descended from the Monck baronets. They had two sons, Richard, who leads a private life, and James, a former Green Jacket officer who is the chairman of the Newcastle Building Society. Lady Ramsbotham predeceased him last year.
One of Ramsbotham’s last interventions in the House of Lords was in support of the Assisted Dying Bill...
General Lord Ramsbotham GCB, CBE (Mil), adjutant-general of the army and HM’s chief inspector of prisons for England and Wales, was born on November 6, 1934. He died after a fall on December 13, 2022, aged 88
