Stuart McCarthy's full name was (Hugo) Stuart D'Arcy McCARTHY (19 XI 1933 - 23 II 1978). He was married in 1958 to (as her first husband - her second marriage, registered in Westminster in Q1 1980, was to (John) Donald Watkins BIRTS (23 II 1936 - 17 VI 2015)) Patricia Noel THOMAS (born 25 XI 1937), by whom he had four daughters:

• Frances Susan Catherine McCARTHY (born 5 IX 1959), who was married in 1989 to Major Jeremy Brent ("Bertie") GROTRIAN (born 7 IX 1959), whose great-grandfather was a brother of Sir Herbert Brent GROTRIAN, 1st Bt (29 III 1870 - 28 X 1951);
• Elizabeth Diana Noel McCARTHY (born 14 III 1962), who, as per Richard's posting, was married in 1989 to Nicholas Edward John HEDLEY (born 14 III 1962);
• Suzanna Patricia D'Arcy McCARTHY (born 22 X 1965), who was married on 3 February 1996 to Robin Anthony BUXTON (born 21 II 1963), a great-great-grandson of Sir Edward North BUXTON, 2nd Bt (16 IX 1812 - 11 VI 1858); and
• Caroline Juliet Angela McCARTHY (born 29 IX 1968), who was married in 1991 to George Justin ROCKE (born 23 III 1965).

Stuart McCarthy was the son of Brigadier Charles Henry Florence D'Arcy McCARTHY OBE (29 VI 1899 - 24 VII 1977) and his first wife (married 1932), Esther M GOOLD. Brig McCarthy was a noted cricketer, and he was employed in the British Foreign Service. His second wife (married 1949, as her third husband) was Margaret Patricia, née BLACKADER, MBE (8 XI 1913 - 14 V 2002); she had been married firstly, on 6 June 1932 (divorced 1934), to (as his first wife) the 2nd and last Baron Waleran (30 III 1905 - 4 IV 1966), and secondly, in 1935, to (as his second wife) Rex Morley HOYES (30 III 1902 - 1983), who later changed his name to Fessenden Charles Rex MORLEY-MORLEY, and was the self-styled "Vicomte de Borenden".
