WISE, Mrs Elizabeth (Elizabeth Alice nee ABEL SMITH) 1936-2026

She died earlier today (2 Aug 2026) in The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, N Yorks. She was yr d of Col Sir Henry ABEL SMITH KCVO 1900-93 sometime head of that gentry family of Wilford House (ABEL SMITH banker descendant) and Lady May Helen Emma CAMBRIDGE 1906-94 d of the 1 & only Earl of ATHLONE 1874-1957 and HRH Princess Alice of Albany 1883-1981 (gd of Queen VICTORIA etc etc). She m 1965 (div 1975) Peter Ronald 1929-2021 s of Capt Anthony Forster WISE IA 1885-1976 scion of that colonial gentry family of Manly and Eva Elizabeth Glentworth 1904-1976 d of Ronald Hugh BAILLIE OBE, and had a dau (Emma Charlotte Abel WISE 1973-74) who died an infant in tragic circumstances. Elizabeth’s elder sister Anne LIDDELL-GRAINGER b 1932 survives her.

This dear lady died hours ago and her family are mourning her loss. We should be mindful of that when responding to this post.

Having said that, please note that I will delete any posts speculating on the death of her daughter.

Mrs Wise's former husband was the brother of Elizabeth Ursula Forster WISE (1924 - 1993), who was the first wife (married 28 IV 1948, divorced 1977), and fourth cousin once removed upwards, of the 3rd Baron Burton (their cousinship was through his, and her maternal grandfather's, Baillie family).
