Obit it the Telegraph of 28 June 2011:
Lord Rodger of Earlsferry, who died on June 26 aged 66, was regarded
as one of the finest legal minds of his generation but, as one of two
Scottish judges on the UK Supreme Court in London, angered
nationalists north of the border who considered him a member of a
"foreign" authority meddling in Scotland's independent legal system.
... Although Alan Rodger was not a product of the Edinburgh legal
establishment, he held most of the senior posts in the Scottish legal
system. He served as Lord Advocate, the senior Law Officer of
Scotland, before becoming Lord Justice General and Lord President of
the Court of Session, the head of the country's judiciary. He was then
appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary (Law Lord) and became a Justice
of the Supreme Court in 2009, when the judicial functions of the House
of Lords were transferred to the new Court.
