Obit in the Daily Telegraph 12 August 2024 -  Lord Colwyn, long-serving Conservative peer whose interests ranged from dentistry to jazz – obituary (telegraph.co.uk)

EXTRACTS:

Lord Colwyn, long-serving Conservative peer whose interests ranged from dentistry to jazz – obituary

As a dentist and jazz aficionado, Colwyn championed fluoride in water, chaired the Lords’ refreshment committee and was a Deputy Speaker

The 3rd Baron Colwyn, who has died aged 82, was a prominent London dentist who sat in the Lords as a Conservative from 1966 to 2022; he was one of the 90 hereditaries elected to stay on in 1999 when most were excluded.

Colwyn chaired the Lords’ refreshment committee from 1997 to 2004, and from 2007 until his retirement in 2022 was a Deputy Speaker. He was vice-chairman of the all-party group on dentistry – and co-chairman of the group on jazz, his great passion……………….

He was born Ian Anthony Hamilton-Smith on New Year’s Day 1942, to the 2nd Baron Colwyn and his first wife Miriam Ferguson. His great-grandfather had been a Liberal supporter, made a baronet by Asquith in 1912 then given a peerage by Lloyd George five years later.

Tony’s childhood was overshadowed by seismic events. His stockbroker father, wounded during war service with the Gordon Highlanders, was cashiered in 1947 after admitting five charges of gross impropriety with Italian men on Ischia and at Turin. Lady Colwyn testified to the court-martial over her husband’s moral character, but the marriage broke up soon after; the 2nd Baron married twice more, but there were no further children……………………………

Colwyn succeeded to his title on his father’s death in 1966. Initially his attendance was low-key, but by the time Tony Blair’s administration removed most of the hereditaries, Colwyn’s work in the upper house was felt to merit his staying on.

From 2006 to 2010 he served on the Science and Technology Select Committee. He was also president of the all-party group for Complementary and Integrated Healthcare, and chairman of the group for Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Services.

In 2005 he took the chair of the financial services company Campbell Montague International, but he stepped down three years later because of his commitments in the Lords.

Colwyn at various times was president of the Natural Medicines Society, the Huntington’s Disease Association, the Arterial Health Foundation, the Society for Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry and the Metropolitan Branch of the British Dental Association; chairman of Raw FM and Banbury Local Radio; patron of the Research Council for Complementary Medicine and a trustee of the Portman Estate.

He was appointed CBE in 1989.

Lord Colwyn married, first, in 1964, Sonia Morgan; they were divorced in 1977, and she died in 2006. In 1977 he married, secondly, Nicola Tyers. She survives him, with a son and a daughter from his first marriage and two daughters from his second. His eldest daughter, Jacqueline, is married to the actor Sean Pertwee.

He is succeeded as 4th Baron by his son, Craig Peter Hamilton-Smith, born on October 13 1968.

Lord Colwyn, born January 1 1942, died August 4 2024

Lord Colwyn obituary: Tory peer, dentist and lively jazz trumpeter

Hereditary peer who performed at the Edinburgh festival with the future stars of Monty Python

The 3rd Baron Colwyn was a practising dentist for 40 years, and an active member of the House of Lords for 55, but an exuberant jazz musician for even longer.

He stumbled on the joys of jazz when, as a teenage trumpeter, he heard the legendary Humphrey Lyttelton play. He teamed up with Jim Beach, a fellow pupil at Cheltenham College who later became manager of the rock group Queen, to form a band called the Autocrats….

…The Autocrats — later renamed the 3B Band (for 3rd Baron) and the Lord Colwyn Band — became a leading society danceband in the 1960s and 1970s, playing at weddings, debs’ dances and hunt balls across the country. They performed at Ronnie Scott’s and the Royal Albert Hall, and in 1987 at the ruby wedding party of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip…

…For good measure, he was almost certainly the only hereditary peer to belong to a trade union — in his case the Musicians’ Union.

Ian Anthony Hamilton-Smith was born in Cheltenham on New Year’s Day 1942, the son of the 2nd Baron Colwyn, an officer in the Gordon Highlanders who later became a stockbroker, and his wife, Miriam (née Ferguson). His parents divorced when he was a child after his father was cashiered for gross indecency…

…he was married to Sonia Morgan, a member of the sports car family, with whom he had a son, Craig, who will inherit his title, and daughter, Jackie, now wife of the actor Sean Pertwee. They divorced in 1976 and the following year he married Nicky Tyers, an events organiser, with whom he had two more daughters; Kirsten, a trainee nutritional therapist, and Tanya, who runs a marketing company…

As a Conservative peer he was appointed CBE for political services in 1989, and was sufficiently active in the Lords to survive the Blair government’s cull of hereditary peers in 1999, being one of 92 elected to stay on… He was narrowly defeated by Baroness D’Souza when he sought to become lord speaker in 2011, and retired from the Lords in 2022…

Lord Colwyn CBE, dentist and politician, was born on January 1, 1942. He died of complications related to Covid on August 4, 2024, aged 82

Sir Craig Peter Hamilton-Smith is now entered on the Official Roll of the Baronetage as the 4th Baronet Hamilton-Smith, formerly Smith, of Colwyn Bay.  He is also referred to as the 4th Baron Colwyn so I assume he has been entered on the Roll of the Peerage as well
