Well that english Rothschild barony is looking a bit ropey so a few
male heirs won't go amiss. Does anyone know how many male members
there are in bearing the Austrian Barony of 1822?

Florence von Preussen's father was naturalised British in 1947 as *Mr*
Friedrich von Preussen. She is not a princess per se, though in
Germany she could add *the name* 'Princess' to her other names, the
title no longer exists in Germany.

They're both descendant of King James I
Nathaniel descend by the dukes of Grafton, St Albans and Richmond,
sons of King Charles II

marquess, according to Burke's 107th ed., all 5 of the famous brothers
were created Barons of Austria.

Eldest brother Amschel Mayer (Frankfurt) (1773-1855) was childless.

Second brother Salomon Mayer's (Vienna) (1774-1855) last living male
descendant died in 1938.

Fourth brother Carl Mayer's (Naples) (1788-1855) last living male
descendant died in 1901.

The only 2 brothers were current living male descendants are the third
brother Nathan Mayer (London) (1777-1836) and the youngest brother
James Mayer (Paris) (1792-1868).

Per Burke's, Nathan Mayer did not assume the Austrian barony. He had
4 sons but only the eldest, Lionel Nathan, has living male
descendants. Burke's say Lionel "by royal license 16 June 1838 was
allowed with other heirs male of body of grantee to use title of Baron
of Austria."

Lionel's living male descendants:

Nathaniel Charles Jacob (4th Baron Rothschild) b. 1936
Nathaniel Philip Victor James b. 1971
James Amschel Victor b. 1985
Nicholas David b. 1951
David Lionel b.
1955
Leopold James b. 1994
Amschel Nathaniel b. 1995
Leopold David b. 1927
Sir Evelyn Robert Adrian de Rothschild b. 1931
Anthony James b. 1977
David Mayer b. 1978

Living male descendants of James Mayer (per Hein Bruins' site, all
bearing the title of Baron and the last name of de Rothschild):

David Rene James b. 1942
Alexandre Guy Francesco b. 1980
Edouard Etienne Alphonse b. 1957
David*
b. ????
Ferdinand*
b. ????
Eric Alain Robert David b. 1940
James* b.
1985
Pietro* b.
1991
Robert James b. 1947
Jakob*
b. ????
Simon* b.
1971
Bruce George * b. 2000
Colin Alexander * b. 2001
Simon Aryeh* b. 2003
Amschel Mayer * b. 2006
Michel Nathaniel Robert Eugene b. 1946
Benjamin Edmond Maurice b. 1963

The names with the asterisk are those shown on Hein Bruins' wonderful
Rothschild site but not in Burke's. All of the others listed are from
Burke's.

There are 11 living male descendants from the English branch who, it
would seem, would be at least entitled to call themselves "Baron."
There are 17 members of the French branch who call themselves "Baron."

Corrections and additions are welcome.

Following Brooke's point, there is the added confusion that most of
those entitled to call themselves 'von' Rothschild either dropped the
'von' or assumed the aristocratic 'de'.

Thanks for that info nice to know that the Austrian Barony is
thriving, as to the von, well as the Austrian branch has died out then
there isn't much point to it. I will be looking out for that site!

Further to my previous entry, there are some Rothschilds who are not
in remainder to the Austrian barony, and there was a Belgium
ambassador who was a Rothschild from the untitled branch who was
created a baron, but I think that he only had dau so that is probably
extinct, though I am not sure if Belgium titles go ad infinitum in
the male line?

This reminds me of the Kate Rothschild/James Goldsmith marriage.

In both cases, a family originally of Jewish origin (in this case, the
Mancroft family) marries into the Rothschild family.
