Some notes on the Liddell family (from BLG 1969, "Liddell of Warwick-on-Eden", BMD records, and other sources):
Mark Charles Liddell (1954-) of Newborough Lodge, Hexham, Northumbarland, insurance broker and company director, 2nd s. of Peter John Liddell (1921-1979), of Moorhouse Hall, Warwick-on-Eden, Carlisle, Northumberland, educ. Ampleforth, Wadham Coll., Oxon. (B.A. 1942, M.A. 1946), farmer in Cumberland 1950-76, underwriting member of Lloyd's, chairman, Fisheries Committee, Association of River Authorities, deputy-chairman, Northern Advisory Board of Sport and Recreation, vice-chairman, Standing Conference of Northern Sport and Recreation, chairman, R. Eden and District Fisheries Association, 1968 Churchill Fellow, freeman, City of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, chairman, North West Water Authority 1973-8, member, National Water Council 1973-, F.Inst.D., F.Z.S., F.R.P.S.L., Lt, R.N.V.R. 1940-6, D.S.C., member, Cumberland River Board 1954-65, Cumberland River Authority 1964-74 (Vice-Chairman 1967-70, Chairman 1970-3) and (m. 1948 [div. by 1957]), (Dorothy) Priscilla, dau. of Ormond Downes, of Beverley Hills, California, U.S.A. [former wife of - Kent? Notice in Ampleforth Journal, p. 105, gives details of engagement of "Peter John Liddell, D.S.C." and "Priscilla Downes Kent"]. P. J. Liddell m. 2nd, 1960, Helen Ann, dau. of Rear-Adm. Alan Watson Laybourne, C.B., C.B.E.

P. J. Liddell only s. of Cmdr Lancelot Charles Liddell (1896-1954), of The Knoll House, nr Wimborne, Dorset, R.N., O.B.E., and Rosalie Allen [as a widow, of 30, Cadogan Square, S.W.1], dau. of James Ballantyne, of Ayrshire.

The connection with Warwick-on-Eden seemingly only came about in P. J. Liddell's generation; previous generations lived at Benwell Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Sherfield Manor, Sherfield-on-Loddon, Basingstoke, Hants. The earliest ancestor given in BLG 1969 is Matthew Liddell (1715-1782), of Jesmond, Northumberland. The book "With a Smile and a Wave" (2005) about family member Capt. John Aidan Liddell, V.C., M.C., of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and R.F.C., by Peter Daybell, says of Matthew Liddell "Matthew Liddell was born in Jesmond in 1715, and was a gentleman farmer living at Boghouse in the Chapelry of Hewarth. He also rented an inn from the Dean and Chapter of Durham Cathedral". The BLG pedigree, as is not unusual, indicates no occupations save details of military and local government service, but Daybell's book mentions Matthew's son Cuthbert was a successful tanner who obtained a grant of arms, and Cuthbert's descendants included mining engineers and colliery developers/ owners.

No stated connection in BLG 1969- unless I somehow missed it!- to the Liddell baronets/ Barons Ravensworth, who are said to descend from a Thomas Liddell, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, cr. Baronet 1642, whose grandfather, Thomas (d. 1577) was Mayor of Newcastle 1572-3 and Sheriff in 1563-4. A link would seem not massively unlikely given the name and locations involved, which further research may establish. For the record, a search of the aforementioned book by Peter Daybell yielded nothing for "baronet" or "Ravensworth" or other related terms, so if a link does exist, it doesn't appear to have been established, or at least not made widely known, subsequent to the publication of BLG 1969 and prior to that of Daybell's book in 2005.

A link to another relevant family- Matthew Liddell, elder brother of P. J. Liddell's grandfather, married 2ndly, Rose Adelaide (-1959), dau. of Frederic Lawrence, of Kalmar, Southampton, and Caerleon, Monmouths., and widow of Leveson William Vernon-Harcourt, of the Barons Vernon.

Ah- explanation of (Dorothy) Priscilla Downes [Kent]'s name, from Tatler's "Engagements" section of 18 Jun. 1947: "Priscilla Downes Kent and Mr Peter John Liddell, D.S.C., who are being married today. Miss Downes Kent is the daughter of Mr Ormond W. Downes of Beverly Hills, California, and of Mrs. Lawrence R. Kent, of 51 South Street, W.1., and New York City" - "Kent" is her stepfather's surname.
