Some notes on the Sancroft[-]Baker family:

Anthony Sancroft Baker adopted the name 'Sancroft-Baker' in 1944; he was of 12, Trafford Close, Great Missenden, formerly of Chippenham, Wilts., The Red House, Penn Street, Amersham, and of The Old House, Great Missenden, a stockbroker and 'memb Ct of Com Council C of London 1941-46 and 1947-50' (not sure of the meaning of this), Master of the Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers 1949.

He was the elder son of Robert Sancroft Baker (1876-1958), of The Grove, East Tytherton, nr Chippenham, educ. Marlborough, per his father's probate record a 'company director', and (m. 1905) Phyllis Grace, dau. of Charles John Price.

R. S. Baker second s. of Samuel Sancroft Baker (1850-1939), of Barnett Wood Cottage, Ashtead, Surrey, stockbroker, and (m. 1874) Ada Louise, dau. of Robert Henderson. The third son, Eric Samuel Sancroft Baker (1878-), of The Old House, Stoke Fleming, Dartmouth, was father of Hugh Honner Sancroft Baker (1915-2007), who married secondly in 1939, Norah Mary (1912-1998), great-granddau. of John Span Plunket, 3rd Baron Plunket, and had issue [see BP 2003].

S. S. Baker apparently only child of Samuel Baker [some sources indicate him to have had the middle name 'Sancroft', but this doesn't appear to be borne out by official records] (1820-1900), of Knapton, Walton on Thames, formerly of Lansdowne Road, Croydon, Surrey, banker, and (m. 1848) Susan Townsend (1815-), dau. of Henry Gisby.

Samuel [Sancroft] Baker s. of Samuel Sancroft Baker (1791-1850), of Knapton and Beeston St Lawrence, Norfolk, farmer [possibly also a farming steward for Sir Jacob Preston at Knapton (Old) Hall per family accounts], churchwarden, St Peter and St Paul, Knapton, Master of the Knapton Harriers, and Elizabeth Perkins, dau. of James Boulter and Elizabeth Perkins. Samuel Sancroft and Elizabeth Perkins Baker's daughter Catherine married Benjamin Massey, whose mother, Sarah Gurney, was second cousin twice removed of the prison reformer Elizabeth Fry.

S. S. Baker elder s. of Joshua Baker (1751-1791), of Ditchingham, Norfolk, merchant and maltster, and (m. 1781) his first cousin, Catherine, dau. of James Sancroft and Catherine, dau. of Charles Baker (see below).

Joshua Baker youngest s. of Samuel Baker (1708-1787), rector of Homersfield and South Elmham Saint Cross 1776-87, of Kirby Cane, nr Beccles, Norfolk 1733-76, and Mary, dau. of John Worts, of Knapton.

Rev. Samuel Baker eldest surviving (born second) s. of Abraham Baker (1668-1751), rector of Ditchingham 1718-51, of All Saints, Chedgrave 1717-18, and of Kirby Cane 1700-33, and (m. 1705) Margaret, dau. of Rev. Samuel Pycroft, rector of Ditchingham. Samuel's younger brother, Charles, a merchant of Ditchingham, married Catherine Clarke, and had issue including Catherine, who married her first cousin Joshua Baker, as above.

'memb Ct of Com Council C of London 1941-46 and 1947-50'

This just means he was a City of London councillor. The Court of Common Council (usually known as Common Council) is the primary decision making body of the City. The members consist of the Lord Mayor, the Aldermen and the Common Councilmen (councillors). “Memb” means he was a Common Councilman - if he were an alderman it would have said so.

Thanks Colin- I was mainly thrown off by the 'Com' part; couldn't think what that could stand for!

Haha, not at all- it wasn't something I had any real knowledge of, and it's always good to learn!
