Tyde what may betyde
Haig shall be Haig of Bemersyde

This 13th century poem (by Thomas the Rhymer) predicts that there shall always be a Haig seated at Bemersyde.  It still holds true today.

Bemersyde had descended though many members of the Haig family (see Burke's Landed Gentry) dating back to the 12th century.  In 1921 it was sold by Arthur Balfour Haig, 28th of Bemersyde (1840 - 1925) to the British Government, who presented it to the 1st Earl Haig (1861 - 1928).

Lord Haig was in fact a collateral of the family, being a 6x g-gs of James Haig, 17th of Bemersyde, so the poem held true.  Bemersyde is still held in the family, now represented by the 3rd Earl Haig & 31st of Bemersyde (born 1961).

There is no heir to the Earldom.

My understanding is that the Chiefship of Clan Haig is tied to the ownership of Bemersyde.

Does anyone know what might happen next to Bemersyde and the Clan Chiefship?

His male heir appears to be Alexander Veitch Haig (born 1960), a g-g-gs of Hugh Veitch Haig, elder brother of the 1st Earl.  Hugh Veitch was Head of the Haig of Ramornie LG family - has Ramornie stayed in that family?

I had a college roommate named Haig and I did some study of them at the time. I always heard it as slightly different:

"Tyde what may
What e'er betyde
Haig will be Haig of Bemersyde".
